Summary

WhileUndertaledid not have the development budget or the fanbase that AAA titles do, it’s still a wonderful RPG Adventure game that has captivated thousands of players throughout the years.Undertaleis undoubtedly one of thebest 16-bit tactical RPGs with strategic elementsout there.

Fan made games and modsare great as they not only help expand on existing titles but also present players with new adventures in a similar universe.Undertalehas enjoyed many of the benefits from its fan made community through various titles that talented developers have released. Here are some of thebest undertale fangames.

Underfell - Fight

6Dusttale

Heavily Focused On Sans And His Quest For Revenge

Dusttalefocuses on Sans as he becomes obsessed with LV to kill the protagonist. To achieve this, he kills other monsters to eventually reach LV 19. This comes as a result of him remembering other timelines where the human always kills everyone.

InDusttale, Sans can remember resets and does not wear the original red scarf fromUndertale. The design ofDusttaleis very similar in most other regards when compared toUndertale, giving players a very familiar experience even though it’s a completely different narrative in many respects. The game is based on a written story by Ask-DustTale, which inspired developer Evan Streblow to bring the story to life and offer players a unique experience that complements theUndertaleuniverse. This title, along with other fangames, has sparked manypopularUndertalefan theoriesthat several people are still discussing today.

5Underfell: One Hell Of A Show

An Interesting Adventure With Black And Red Undertones

Underfell: One Hell of a Showis quite peculiar, as it’s the fangame ofUnderfell, a fangame ofUndertale. Although one would think that so many derivations would lead to a subpar release,Underfell:One Hell of a Showmanages to prove this wrong, as it offers players a very interesting experience that includes multiple battles.

The design is also quite unique, as it opts for black and red undertones that give it a hellish look—very different from the colorful take thatUnderstoryhas to offer. The originalUnderfellwas created by developer Underfella, and the developer Daksha is credited as a co-creator responsible for the sprites and art forUnderfell: One Hell of a Show. Although this title does not feature as many elements, such as themost evil decisions that can be made inUndertale, it’s still great fun to play and deserves a spot on this list for that very reason.

4Outertale: Project Spacetime

An Interesting Deep Space Take On Undertale

Outertaleis probably one of the most interesting fangames based onUndertale,as it changes the setting of the Underground for a space setting and all the characters have star-themed attires, attacks and music themes.

That said, even with all the changes applied, the official canon ofOutertalefollows very closely that of Undertale’s, with the only exception being that when the monsters lost the war, they were not banished to the Underground, but to space instead. The Pacifist, Neutral and Genocide routes apply in the game as well, and each character has a very similar personality as in the original. The game was inspired by a comic published on June 14, 2025, by author Mimi Pippinski. WhileOutertalemight not have thesame number of neutral endings asUndertale, it still manages to deliver a very enjoyable experience to those who loved the original game it’s based on and the entertaining mechanics present in it.

3Understory

A More Detailed And Colorful Take On Undertale

Understoryis really interesting, as it does not focus on changing the setting of the original Undertale, but rather to continue the story. Taking on the role of the protagonist, named Nick, players will have to take on various challenges as they explore this wonderful world that has been crafted for them by the PurpleTraveller Team.

The design ofUnderstoryretains several elements from the originalUndertale. However, it takes a few liberties, adding a more colorful palette and arguably more detailed characters that players can appreciate as they progress through the game. While it doesn’t look as similar to the games in thePokémonfranchise, it does have a few traits that could trick players into thinking they’re exploring a town in the Hoenn region. There’s no denying that the originalUndertalehas a lot more impactful quotesand will likely never be matched by any fangames due to the phenomenon it was in its day. However, even then,Understoryis a great title that any fan of this universe should try.

2Pokétale

A Pokémon Inspired Adventure

The backstory behindPokétaleis very interesting and somewhat based on what players saw in the originalUndertale. It’s focused on a war between the race of humans and the rays of monsters, in which humans emerged victorious and monsters were trapped underground due to a magic spell. This title, also known asTrainertale, has a lot to offer players in terms of the experience and the new concepts available to them.

It’s quite obvious thatPokétalealso takes inspiration from thePokémonfranchise due to the design of the various characters players can encounter along the way and the exploration mechanics, as well as the combat system. In fact, if players get distracted for a minute, they couldn’t be blamed for thinking that they’re playing one of thePokémongames from the Game Boy/Nintendo DS era. Some of the locations in the game are: Ruins, Snowdin, Waterfall, Hotland, and New Home, all of which are present in the originalUndertale.Pokétaleis, without a doubt, one of thebest games to play for those who loveUndertale.

1Undertale Yellow

Arguably, The Best Undertale Fangame Out There

Undertale Yellow,is, without a doubt, the bestUndertalefangame out there. It’s set in a prequel to the original game and follows a human child named Clover as they travel along a strange path to the surface following events that led them to the Underground. The game mechanics are very similar to those already available onUndertale. However, this title does implement a few things of its own that make it very interesting. Even the combat mechanics feel similar, as players can either choose to defeat monsters through the use of violence or by going on a more pacifist route.

Undertale Yellowalso features various quality-of-life improvements over the originalUndertale, some of which are also present inUndertale’s spiritual successor,Deltarune. All in all, whileUndertaleremains king in its category, it’s hard to deny thatUndertale Yellowhas a lot to offer players who have fallen in love with the original game since it was first released.
