Summary
Star Trekhas seen a lot of tie-ins over the years, and one of the franchise’s most prominent streaming-era stars has a pretty bold (and fitting) suggestion for another way the science fiction franchise can boldly go where it hasn’t before.
Star Trekhas accrued a large cast over the course of its decades of content across TV, movies, video games, novels, and more. Each iteration of the original franchise run was defined by its characters, with that same tradition being honored in the modern Paramount-led era. One of these exuberant characters in the modern franchise is Anson Mount’s Captain Pike, a role made even more fitting considering the fact that Mountauditioned for a differentStar Trek: Strange New Worldscharacteraltogether at first. As the Captain of the Enterprise and main character on the show, Mount’s charisma and character work have been a massive part of theStar Trek: Discoveryspinoff.
While Mount has been involved in some pretty eccentric things, including real-world missions to make contact with aliens, the star’s latest idea is one that will bewilder even longtime fans. Speaking on theStar Trek: Strange New Worldspanel at Emerald City Comic Con viaPopverse, Mount admitted that he didn’t actually do much cooking around the house, much to his wife’s chagrin and in direct opposition to his on-screen character, who has frequently been portrayed taking on cooking tasks in the show. As a follow-up to his assertion that he made a mean “almond-crusted chicken breast over candied pear slices covered with a brick of cheese”, the star was asked whether he’d ever consider putting out a Captain Pike cookbook, leading to the revelation that he’s actually been trying to get one made for ages.
I have been saying to the people in the decision-making department for years, ‘We should make a cookbook.’ And they say, ‘Yeah, we should talk about that,’ and then I never hear anything.
Putting out an official cookbook for theStar Trekfandom to enjoy would be a great (and unique) addition toCaptain Pike’s growing legacy within the franchise, and so it’s pretty sad that the higher-ups don’t see the vision. However, not all hope is lost, as the star goes on to give fans an avenue to assist in his quest to get the cookbook out. “Would you do me a favor? Post about it,” Mount entreated. “Say you want a Captain Pike cookbook, and they’ll do it. They’re listening. They’ll do it if you say you want it.” Mount makes a pretty solid point, as demand for a cookbook that the star himself seems more than willing to take on as a passion project would be a no brainer for the company, especially since it fits so well into the on-screen characterization fans have come to adore. It’s not clear how much noise fans would have to make to get the word across to the decision makers back at Paramount, but if it worked it wouldn’t be the first time that fans campaigned their way to something cool.
Fortunately, there’s no rush to get out the cookbook at this very moment, as Mount is set to be involved with the franchise for a lot longer. With the show’s third season set to hit the streamer this year, a fourth season is already in production for Paramount+. There’ll also be tons of other Star Trek content, including the exciting new showStarfleet Academy, which longtime franchise star anddirector Jonathan Frakes gave the latest update on recently. While fans get to work campaigning, Mount and Captain Pike will have more than enough time to start drafting a recipe list.
