Because new IPs are always risky in the game industry, it’s natural to wonder what will develop into a franchise. It’s also natural to wonder how the game will be supported after launch, especially when it is not something with a battle pass or typical multiplayer game support.Atomfallis one such case, a brand-new IP with plenty of storytelling and franchise potential, anddeveloper Rebellionis hard at work getting it ready to ship and to begin work on what comes next.

Rebellion head of design Ben Fisher spoke about the future ofAtomfallin a recent interview with Game Rant. Though guarded about specifics, he did lay out the broad plans for the short-term future of the property.

Atomfall’s Post-Launch Plans:

Atomfallis set in the quarantine zone following a fictionalized version of the real-worldWindscale Incident, a nuclear disaster in 1957 on the northwest coast of England. That’s a rich backdrop for a game, but the action-survival game developers at Rebellion want to broaden that scope with supplemental content. While they are considering the potential for anAtomfallsequel in the future, that supplemental content includes two DLCs and a 4-part comic series for now. As Fisher said,

“It’s quite possible that there could be a sequel toAtomfall, butfor now, we are just focused on the final polishing and the upcoming DLC content that we’ve announced. There is also a 4-part comic miniseries coming in the 2000 AD Magazine … We have two planned DLC updates at the moment, both taking the story in distinctly different directions. I can’t say more than that now, but stay tuned for more updates!”

Taking the story in distinctly different directions could open the door for the game to veer into its different tonal inspirations more fully, dedicating the DLC to folk horror or its retro-science fiction vibes. On the other hand, it could mean exploring something outsideAtomfall’s general tone, taking it in a completely different and impossible-to-predict direction. Either is interesting for players, but of course,Atomfall’s March 27 release datemeans the base game is everyone’s focus for now.
