Summary
Avengers: Doomsdayleaks seemingly spoiled significant plot details and the team’s roster. However,Avengers: DoomsdayandSecret Warsdirectors Joe and Anthony Russo had disappointing news for fans excited by the leaked concept art.
Avengers: Doomsdaywill assemble some of the MCU’s most memorable characters for a showdown against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. While some MCU actors have confirmed or hinted at their involvement, figuring out the team roster for the next twoAvengersfilms has been a guessing game. A rumor claims evenMarvel Studios hasn’t settled on the finalAvengers: Doomsdaycast. However, leakedAvengers: Doomsdayart seemingly confirmed the film’s primary setting and multiple cast members. When the Marvel Studios concept artist who shared the images had their ArtStation account (where the artwork was shared) scrapped, fans assumed the photos were legitimate.
Is That Avengers: Doomsday Leaked Concept Art Real?
During an interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, the interviewer acknowledged that concept images don’t always reflect the finished product but asked directors Joe and Anthony Russo if theleakedAvengers: Doomsdayconcept artspoiled anything from the film. Joe Russo bluntly stated that nothing fromAvengers: DoomsdayorSecret Warswas spoiled because the concept art was not from either movie. Anthony Russo reiterated his brother’s comments, stating that there were no spoilers in the concept art because the artwork wasn’t theirs.
Can The Russo Brothers Be Trusted?
This news may disappoint some fans because the leakedAvengers: Doomsdayconcept art made some of them excited about the film for the first time. While few doubt his acting talent, many viewed Downey Jr.’s casting as Doctor Doom as a desperate ploy to entice audiences into theaters with the MCU’s most bankable star. Hiring the Russo Brothers to direct both films from scripts penned by Stephen McFeely was also criticized. While the Russo Brothers and McFeely were praised for their respective work as directors and co-writers onAvengers: Infinity WarandEndgame, their post-MCU films haven’t been well-received by critics. Their recently released Netflix movieElectric Statewas panned by critics, prompting some to wonder if the Russo Brothers could survive without Marvel.
So, when the concept art leaked, it was an exciting day for many fans who were otherwise skeptical ofAvengers: DoomsdayandSecret Wars. The leaked artwork seemingly confirmed theBattleworld was the primary setting ofAvengers: DoomsdayandSecret Wars, with the film adapting the location as a medieval-type alternate universe. The images also indicated that fan favorites like Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord and Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel would meet and others would find themselves serving Downey Jr.’s God Emperor Doom. While some people likeMyTimeToShineHellobelieved most of the concept art was forAvengers: Secret Wars, fans deduced that the plot for one or both films would involve Doctor Doom creating an alternate universe in which he’s the supreme ruler and one or a few Avengers having to ‘wake up’ their teammates to remind them of their former reality. While they admitted concepts can and often do change once a project begins production, most fans praised the artwork and viewed the images as the most positive sign that the film might be good.
But can the Russo Brothers be trusted when they say the concept art isn’t fromAvengers: DoomsdayorSecret Wars? During a 2018 interview withUproxx, the Russos famously denied theAvengers 4title was spoken inInfinity War. When Marvel Studios announced theAvengers: Endgametitle, fans quickly noted that the term “endgame” was said by Doctor Strange inInfinity Warbefore the sorcerer was erased from existence by Thanos' snap. Also,Andrew Garfield denied his involvement inSpider-Man: No Way Homemultiple times, and fans don’t need to be reminded of how that turned out. So, the Russo Brothers may be telling the truth, but fans aren’t wrong to be skeptical.
Avengers: Doomsdayis scheduled to be released in theaters on Jun 13, 2025.
