Summary

Split Fictionis a game that packs as much humor as it can into each quest, and one of the ways it achieves this is with Easter eggs. These small secrets often reference other popular video games, such asDark SoulsandBaldur’s Gate 3, as well as Hazelight Studios' previous titles, such asIt Takes Two.

Beyond gaming references, there are also callouts to other elements of popular culture and even old fairy tales. While some of thebestSplit FictionEaster eggsappear for all to see throughout the main story, others are hidden, requiring players to go searching.

7It Takes Two Easter Eggs

Cutie The Elephant

If there’s one dark and utterly hilarious moment players remember from Hazelight Studios' previous game,It Takes Two, it’s probably the elephant scene. Thankfully, players can relive the horrors inflicted by May and Cody during the Play Me Techno sublevel of the Neon Revenge chapter.

6Dune’s Sandworms As Sandfish

Ride The Sandfish & Get Their Attention By Thumping The Sand

Dune’ssandworms have provided filmgoers with some of the best cinematography in recent years, andSplit Fictionpays homage to them, not in some tiny Easter egg or reference, but via an entire side story. The Legend of the Sandfish is one of thebest-looking levels inSplit Fictionand can be found during the Neon Revenge chapter.

To traverse the sands of time safely, Mio and Zoe will have to attract the sandfish by thumping the ground while the other runs to safety. This is a huge reference toDuneas thumpers are used by the Fremen to attract sandworms. Players will even get the opportunity to ride these sandfish, just like the bravest Fremen do.

5Peppa Pig Reference

Zoe Likes Jumping In Muddy Puddles

Peppa Pigisn’t normally referenced in video games, but given there is an entireside story inSplit Fictionwhere Zoe and Mio play as pigs, the opportunity could not be missed. To trigger thisPeppa PigEaster egg, the player controlling Zoe during the Farmlife side story needs to wallow in the mud.

She will then say, “I love muddy puddles”, which is, of course, a reference to Peppa Pig’s love for jumping in muddy puddles. This is just one of many humorous moments during this whimsical side story.

4The Three Little Pigs

The Third Pig With His Stone House

Another Easter egg during the Farmlife side story is a reference to The Three Little Pigs fairy tale. Partway through this story, Mio and Zoe will walk past a brick house with a smug little pig inside.

He will boast that his house is indestructible, but if the player controlling Mio’s pig heads behind the house, they will be able to test its structural integrity. By using the fart-dash ability, Mio’s pig will utterly destroy the brick house, exposing the inhabitant to the Big Bad Wolf. This will also unlock anAchievement/Trophy forSplit Fictioncalled Huffing and Puffing, another reference to the fairy tale.

3Dark Souls

Rest Here Weary Traveler

TheDark Soulsfranchise is constantly being referenced in other games, such as featuring as anEaster egg inKingdom Come: Deliverance 2. In fact, theDark SoulsEaster egg inSplit Fictionis extremely similar, as both depict the bonfires fromDark Souls, which act as checkpoints to rest at.

If the sword through the bonfire wasn’t enough, however, Mio and Zoe can actually sit down here, and it will say “Moonfire Lit” and “Rest here weary traveler”. To find this Easter egg during the Moon Market side story, players will need to head right when they see the large sleeping cat. Hop across some floating coffins, and the bonfire is then found inside a small cave.

2A Baldur’s Gate 3 Reference

Get Turned Into A Cheese Wheel

While most quests and stories inSplit Fictionare fairly linear and on the rails, the Moon Market side story allows players to wander around the market and have some fun. Here, players will want to try out all the potion combinations, eat some sweets, and let off some fireworks.

There is also a magical wand that Mio and Zoe can try out on one another. The spell fired by this wand turns the target into a wheel of cheese, which is a reference toBaldur’s Gate 3. Given the sheer size ofBG3,not all players will understand this Easter egg, as they must have had a certain interaction with Akabi at his Wheel of Fortune as part of theCircus of the Last Days in Act 3.

1Golden Smaug From The Hobbit Easter Egg

Mio & Zoe’s Dragons Get Submerged In Gold Just Like Smaug

DuringThe Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the dwarves trap the titular dragon Smaug in a fountain of mountain gold, but incredibly, he survives, shaking off the gold as he ascends into the sky.

Split Fictionpays homage to this moment during theRise of the Dragon Realm chapter, which is naturally all about dragons. Going from eggs to hatchlings and then adolescent dragons, players witness and partake in the life cycles of the last two dragons in Zoe’s world. The last transformation sees the dragons jump into a pool of gold, and emerge just as Smaug does, shaking off the gold.
