Summary

Fire Force, much like its predecessorSoul Eater, both written by Atsushi Ohkubo, has a lot of eccentric and interesting characters. One of the great things aboutSoul Eateris that it is one of the few anime that features a female protagonist, which is not a common sight in shonen shows.

While very few have the strength and charisma of Maka Albarn, Fire Force has its own set of interesting female characters who are strong, and add layers to the story. Fire Force is not shy about fan service, but the characters are not defined by it. While difficult to call the objective best female character, there are some standout candidates.

Ritsu serves as the guardian of Inca, the fifth pillar and she is very excited about her job. Ritsu is introduced as a loyal member of the White-Clad and the leader of the Knights of the Purple Smoke. She has powers that make her able to reanimate the corpses of infernals and use up the fires of the dead.

She is a formidable opponent and her balanced nature really helps to keep the more carefree Inca at bay and the two work surprisingly well together. Without Ritsu, Inca would probably have been a lessinteresting villainin the anime. Her dedication to her ward is also admirable.

The backstory of Amaterasu is pretty sad and, for someone that isn’t seen much in the anime, she is one of the characters that makes the biggest impact in the story. She is essentially the energy source of the entire Tokyo Empire and her immense powers make her incredibly strong.

However, she also harbors a deep hatred for humanity for how they treated her and tries to persuade people to do wrong. This was the case with Shinra when she tells him to kill and used the treatment Shinra received as a kid as fuel to hurt others. While fuelled with malicious intent, her importance to the story makes her a compelling character.

Hikage & Hinata aretwin sistersfrom Asakusa and are part of the Special Fire Force Company 7 headed by Benimaru. The twins are cute little girls who are a lot stronger than they look. Like other indigenes of Asakusa, they love a good fight and are loyal to Benimaru.

Within the story they are a big reason for the evolution of Tamaki’s powers, and it was through training with them that she was able to grow stronger as she developed her Nekomata powers. They are also strong enough to take down most adult characters.

Lisa Isarabi was first introduced when the characters of Company 8 go in search of Vulcan and is initially a nice and caring individual. It is revealed that she was actually working with Dr. Giovanni and played the role of a villain.

She would eventually become an ally later on and even joinedCompany 8like Vulcan did. She was instrumental in establishing the danger that was Dr. Giovanni and it was through his treatment of Lisa that fans were able to realize what sort of bad guy Giovanni was.

Haumea is one of the major antagonists of Fire Force and her personality is twisted. She works with her guardian, Charon, and as the 2nd Pillar, is also one of the more powerful characters in the series. Haumea’s story is not black and white, and when perceived from an angle, could even be seen as a victim.

Haumea became who she is due to the collective dark thoughts of humanity. Cursed to always hear the worst of people’s thoughts, anyone would break under such torment, and Haumea was no different. Her fascinating backstory makes her a pretty decent villain and that only helped enrich the story being told.

Inca’s story is one that has been explored in shonen; a young lady with incredible power is then chased by both the heroes and villains (think Eri inMy Hero Academia) to recruit to their side. Normally, the heroes win the character’s trust and loyalty, but it was different in Fire Force.

Inca is the fifth pillar and therefore, very powerful. She was already established as a morally grey character who was willing to use her fire powers to intimidate and extort rather than outrightly help out. Her somewhat unstable personality made her stand out, and this just caused her to be a more compelling character.

Tamaki was definitely the fanservice character of the show as her inexplicable bad luck ensured that she wound up in compromising situations time and time again. Thankfully, that is not all that there was to the character as she showed herself willing to change and improve.

She was able to do this with the help of the people of Asakusa, especially Hikage and Hinata. She is also a potential love interest for Shinra and, as a tsundere, she fulfills that role within the story.

Iris is a member of the Special Fire Force Company 8 where she offers prayers that ensure the infernals have a safe passage to the other world. She acts as a gateway for Shinra into the story as she is one of the first people he saves.

Her relationship with Hibana helped deepen the audience’s understanding of the two of them which was certainly beneficial. She’s also a little ditsy and creates some of the show’s comic relief. On top of all this, her timid look belies a strong personality andgreat braverywhen in battle.

Hibana is the captain of the Special Fire Force Company 5 which is the research arm of the force. Hibana played the role of an antagonist, after which she would also become an ally and develop a crush on Shinra.

Hibana is a well-developed character and is very interesting on several fronts. One one side, there is her design, which is really cool and her fashion sense is quite good making her easily the most stylish character on the show. The battle against Company 8 also changes her quite a bit, and it helped fans empathize with her once they find out about her tragic background.

Maki Oze is a member of the Special Fire Force Company 8 and a 2nd generation fire user. She was formerly a soldier and therefore, has military training. Maki breaks the mold in a lot of ways. Firstly, her design. She is a muscular female character, which isn’t usually common. This plays into her story, and it is nice to see that regardless of her physique, she is still a romantic at heart.

She also gets quite a lot of development later in the story as the audience is introduced to her military family and her overbearing father who are against her decision to be with Company 8. Maki is eventually able to stand up for herself and become her own person. Her steady character which makes her seem like the older sister of the company 8 family helps her to stand out as a character.
