Summary
Chrono Trigger, one of the most beloved role-playing games of the 16-bit era, has hit a major milestone in the gaming industry, surpassing 5 million units sold. Having just surpassed 30 years since its original release in Japan, 2025 is a big year forChrono Trigger, and the reveal of that sales figure puts an exclamation point on its legacy.
Chrono Triggeris, at its heart, atime travel gamein which the party, made of fighters from different eras, zip across the timestream of a fantasy world to try to prevent a cataclysmic event caused by a deadly entity known as Lavos. Its original 1995 release drew massive praise not just for its compelling story, in which players could alter different eras by changing the past, but for its innovative combat functions, like its early use of character-specific combat timers.
The game left an imprint on the real-world JRPG genre as well, asSquare Enix’s official Japanese websiterecently touted the figure of 5 million units shipped worldwide since its original launch. That number may sound less impressive when compared to big-budget RPGs of the modern era, but taking the time of its release and its status as a standalone RPG into account, it cementsChrono Triggeras one of themost influential games on the SNES.
Chrono Trigger Has Sold More Than 5 Million Copies
The30th anniversary ofChrono Triggerfell on March 11, coinciding with the game’s original release on the Super Famicon in Japan, though it didn’t make its way to North America until July 18, 2025. The classic RPG has received official ports for the original PlayStation console, the Nintendo DS, mobile devices, and PCs over the years, but since early 2018, it has gone mostly untouched by its publisher and developer. That is set to change in 2025, as Square Enix teased earlier this month that it has “various projects that go beyond the world of the game” lined up for release over the course of 2025 as a way of thanking fans for their loyalty.
There has been no indication of what these projects will entail, but many fans seem hopeful thatSquare Enix will remasterChrono Triggerfor modern consoles. The timing of the anniversary seems, in the eyes of many longtime players, perfect to announce the launch of such a project, especially considering that Square Enix has given similar treatments to olderFinal FantasyandDragon Questgames in recent years. Meanwhile, old rival RPG developer Konami just releasedSuikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Warsearlier this month, reviving another RPG series that launched in 1995.
