During the March 20 Future Game Show at the 2025 Game Developers Conference, Bloober Team premiered the first episode of itsCronos: The New Dawndeveloper diaries. The five-minute video features co-directors Jacek Zieba and Wojciech Piejko commenting on thesetting ofCronos: The New Dawnand diving into some of its core elements, including lore and monsters.
Cronos: The New Dawn Has a Wide Range of Inspirations
The world of the upcoming game is inspired by a wide variety of popular horror and sci-fi media, including John Carpenter’sThe Thing, Netflix’s seriesDark, and Terry Gilliam’s12 Monkeys. Zieba and Piejko also cited FromSoftware’sDark Soulsseries as an influence. Gameplay-wise,Cronos: The New Dawnwill draw from the likes ofResident EvilandDead Space, featuring challenging encounters with gnarly animations and dismemberment. That notwithstanding, the system for amputating enemy limbs won’t work exactly like inDead Space, the co-directors said, noting that the game will feature their “own take” on action horror combat.
The game itself is set on an alternate version of the Earth, where most of humanity was eradicated in the ’80s via an apocalyptic event known as The Change. The protagonist ofCronos: The New Dawnis known as a Traveler, which is a reference to their mission of finding time rifts to jump back in time with the goal of extracting people who didn’t survive The Change. The world that they’ll be exploring is full of monsters known as The Orphans. Elaborating on this moniker, Piejko and Zieba explained that these abominations are effectively what was left of humanity following The Change.
The Orphans can take many different forms, each more terrifying than the next. What they all have in common is that they are created from human flesh, which Zieba says is a conscious homage to the entiregenre of body horror. The firstCronos: The New Dawndeveloper diary offers a few glimpses at some previously unseen monsters, albeit without revealing too much. Near the end of the video, the co-directors confirm a variety of minor game details, like the inclusion of ladders, walls of flesh, melee combat, and at least one fire weapon. Asked whether the game will include aliens, Zieba and Piejko responded with a definite “maybe.”
