Summary
Dexter: Resurrectionwill premiere this summer, with filming currently underway. Michael C. Hall will return as iconic serial killer, Dexter Morgan, while original showrunner, Clyde Phillips, will take the reins once again. Many fans were surprised that Dexter was actually alive, after his seemingly definitive ending in the limited series,Dexter: New Blood.Phillips took part in a Reddit AMA session last week and confirmed exactly why that controversial ending was retconned, and why the show is returning.
Dexter: New Bloodwas Showtime’s biggest ever hit, so when they merged with Paramount, the Dexter-verse’s continuation was inevitable. However, this wasn’t the reason given by Phillips, during the Reddit Q&A with writer and producer Scott Reynolds.

After eight seasons of the originalDexterseries, it would be understandable thatMichael C. Hallwould want to explore new roles, and avoid the dreaded type casting. Hall did take on some interesting roles afterDexterfinished, but he was lured back to finish the serial killer’s story in a more satisfying way in 2021’s limited series,New Blood.Harrison Morgansupposedly shot and killed his father in the snowy setting of Iron Lake in upstate New York in the final episode, but Michael C. Hall made a special appearance at San Diego Comic Con last year to announce he would be returning to the role, as well as providing thenarration for the prequel series,Original Sin.Resurrectionshowrunner,Clyde Phillips, has now revealed in aReddit AMAthat it was Michael C. Hall who was pushing to return:
We decided to bring the character back because Michael C. Hall came to me and said “I want to keep going. Can you figure out how to ‘unkill me’?” My first phone call was to Scott, and he felt the same way. It was off of Michael wanting to continue, and we figured out how to do it.
Of course, Paramount and Showtime didn’t exactly need persuasion to reboot the Dexter-verse, as it was proving to be so popular with a new generation of fans who binge-watched it on Netflix. However, knowing that Michael C. Hall was the one to set the wheels in motion is very interesting.Hall has nothing to prove after a superb career in television and film, but Dexter Morgan is easily his most recognizable role, and there is plenty more story to tell about the serial killer with a code.
Michael C. Hall Missed Playing Dexter Morgan And The Fans Are Clearly Eager To See Him Return
Clyde Phillips and Scott Reynolds' Reddit AMA proved to be a hit with fans, as they answered many questions about the Dexter-verse.The fans were keen to find out more about the upcoming sequel series,Dexter: Resurrection, and it was revealed exactly why Michael C. Hall wanted to keep going. Scott Reynolds added:
Michael (C. Hall) missed Dexter, and so did we.
It seemed like a no-brainer to bring Michael C. Hall back as Dexter Morgan. The creative team, along with Paramount and Showtime, all wanted him to come back, and Hall was the one who ultimately chose to return. However, most importantly, the fans want Dexter back on television screens. Both Dexter finales were poorly received, so this really is third time lucky for Michael C. Hall to give his iconic character a proper ending. Having said that, don’t expect it to come anytime soon as the plan is forResurrectionto run for multiple seasons. The Dexter-verse is simply too popular to work towards an ending just yet, and it’s set to expand even further with theTrinity Killer spin-off, and an almost certain renewal of the prequel series,Original Sin.
