Summary

Eidos Montreal, the studio behind multipleTomb Raider,Deus Ex, and Marvel games, has announced that “up to 75” people from its workforce will be laid off in the near future. This is the second consecutive year in whichEidos Montrealhas endured job cuts, having been through a similar setback in the recent past.

In the last few years, the news about layoffs has unfortunately been a regular occurrence, owing to some very tough times for the gaming industry. During this period, an array of studios of various sizes have either completely shut shop or have resorted to relieving some of their employees to ensure survival. The widespread job cuts have not only affected studios whose games have struggled but also impacted, to a degree, those developers who have recently experienced major success, such as theMarvel Rivalsteam. Most recently, the Canadian developer responsible for making well-received hits, such asDeus Ex: Mankind DividedandMarvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, joined this list, and not for the first time.

Eidos Montreal

On its social media channels, Eidos Montreal shared a notice, revealing that as many as 75 of its employees are set to get laid off soon. Without diving into the details, the Embracer Group-owned studio pointed out that the forthcoming expiry of a mandate was the reason for these layoffs. The post added that this also happened because Eidos Montreal couldn’t “entirely reallocate” those affected to one of its in-development projects. This news comes on the heels of job cuts conducted at another Embracer Group entity, Crystal Dynamics, which has collaborated with Eidos Montreal onmultipleTomb Raidertitlesbefore. Furthermore, the status update mentions that the Canadian studio remains “committed” to bringing its ongoing projects to life.

Eidos Montreal Lays Off a Portion of Its Workforce

Since Embracer Group’s 2022 acquisition of certain Square Enix studios and IPs, Eidos Montreal has undergone restructuring and layoffs multiple times in a short span. In January 2024, the new owner let go of 97 employees at its subsidiary and reportedly alsoditched a newDeus Exproject, upsetting fans of the franchise. Given the way that Embracer Group kicked off 2025 with layoffs at Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal, things don’t seem to be that promising for the parent company even now, not fully ruling out the risk of similar moves taking place again.

Interestingly, Eidos Montreal is alsosupporting the development ofFabletogether with Playground Games and Third Kind Games. While it is unclear how the latest layoffs will affect the in-development RPG planned to launch in 2026, there are chances that fans may find out more about it in an eventual sitrep coming down the road.
