League of Legendsstarted off as a simpleDotA-inspired MOBA game, but it quickly evolved into a cultural phenomenon. Riot Games' debut title exploded in popularity in the years following its 2009 release, to the point that it eventually became one of the most successful games of all time. Thanks in part to its free-to-play business model,League of Legendshas been played by more than 150 million gamers worldwide and has generated over $1 billion dollars in revenue on an annual basis. Despite ongoing complaints about its toxic community, aggressive monetization, and lack of approachability towards newcomers, no game has truly been able to dethrone it.
Due to the overwhelming popularity ofLeague, Riot Games was, at one point, unable to dedicate the time and resources to developing a new game. However, over the last 5 or so years, the Los Angeles-based studio has expanded its production efforts to other standalone projects. The first game that Riot released after the launch ofLeague of Legendswas2019’sTeamfight Tactics, an auto-battler set in theLoLuniverse. Afterward, it developed games in several other genres, including the PvP FPSValorantand the card battlerLegends of Runeterra. Nowadays, Riot is working to expand theLeague of LegendsIP with multiple new spin-offs.
