Summary

Fallout 4already offers a lot of content as it is, from its lineup of weapons and armor with various upgrades, to its crafting and settlement building with endless possibilities. Of course, its quests can’t be forgotten either, with hours upon hours of both main quests and side activities to get through along the way.

Those same quests and activities over and over again are undoubtedly fun, but sometimes it’s good to have a little change, or maybe a whole new experience. Naturally, that’s where mods come in, and there is certainly no shortage of options to pick from.

1Mind Games - Prologue Demo

Nick Valentine’s Mysterious New Case

Mind Games - Prologue Demo is a sort of “preview” release (hence the name) for an intriguing newFallout 4quest mod created by a team of modders. While still being its own standalone mod project, the questline it provides aims to be an expansion toFallout 4’s vanilla storyline.

Players will be brought a new case to investigate alongside thefan-favorite detective Nick Valentine, taking them on a journey through the various tunnels beneath Boston as various factions war over its territory. Despite being just a demo release, the authors have provided a ton of content to go with it. A new set of locations to explore, from the underground sewer systems and tunnels, to a whole new town area called “The Sluice,” complete with its unique NPCs, shops, and side quests.

But that’s not even half of the content on offer here. Currently, it’s said to provide around five to six hours of gameplay in total, which is an impressive amount for even a full mod release, let alone just a demo. Overall, Mind Games - Prologue works incredibly well as an expansion to the vanilla story, providing something unique and fun, while not deviating from the core theme ofFallout 4.

2Attack Of The Lobotomites

Then Came The Coils! The Tesla Coils!

Attack of the Lobotomites is a fantastic DLC-sized quest mod released back in the spring of 2024. The plot focuses on a strange satellite that crashes just south of Quincy, bringing the new threat of the Lobotomites fromFallout New Vegas' Old World BluesDLCtoFallout 4’s Commonwealth.

The mod is packed with its unique armor, weapons, characters, and dialogue. Of course, it also brings in its own questline, taking players through the all-new Braintree Mental Rehabilitation Center, and its four unique bosses. Those who were fans ofOld World BluesfromFallout: New Vegaswill feel right at home playing this one, with the same somewhat terrifying experiments, mixed with the comical dialog that truly does feel like a nice callback toNew Vegas.

3Shady Motives

Modding For Charity!

Shady Motives was a full-on team effort from theFallout 4modding community, with many well-known members banding together to work on the project for only a single weekend. It starts with the player receiving a mysterious holotape from a character named “Angelo,” which initiates the rest of the mod, featuring a new dungeon and player home, as well as unique weapons and armor for the player. What’s more, Wes Johnson even offered to lend his talents as an actor for the project, known for voicing many iconic characters, like Moe Cronin fromFallout 4,orSheogorath fromSkyrim.

But Shady Motives isn’t just a great and well-crafted mod; the project was also made to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association through theModding to End Alzheimer’s campaign. So far, the campaign has successfully raised nearly $7,000 with the project, but that’s just for this mod alone. The campaign itself has donemany different community projects like thisover the years, each raising considerable amounts of money for a great cause.

Seeing the community come together to not only create an enjoyable experience for players, but also raise money for medical research in the process is just awesome on all fronts.

4Fallout 4 - Point Lookout

Brings Back The Classic Fallout 3 DLC

Point Lookout wasFallout 3’s classic fourth DLC released in October 2009, bringing a unique, apocalyptic rendition of the real-world Point Lookout State Park located in Maryland. With its dark, gloomy swamps filled with all sorts of irradiated wasteland creatures, the expansion was praised for just how different its design was compared to the base game’s Capital Wasteland.

That’s where the ambitiousFallout 4 - Point Lookoutmod from 2022 comes in. Created by a group known as “The Capital Wasteland Team,” it’s a faithful, ground-up recreation of the original DLC inFallout 4, featuring custom remakes of nearly all of its content. What’s more, the same team is currently gearing up to release yet another large mod, this time a remake ofFallout 3’sThe PittDLC.

As if all of this wasn’t ambitious enough, it’s only a smaller part of a much larger project that’s been in the works for years:Fallout 4: Capital Wasteland. Aimed at recreating the entirety ofFallout 3from the ground-up as one big total-conversion mod forFallout 4, which would be exciting to see.

5Fallout Vault 13

Modern Fallout Meets The Original

The originalFalloutgames are just two of the many classic CRPG greats from the 1990s, but their style of gameplay and mechanics may not be everyone’s speed, even someFalloutfans. So, for those players not willing to learn the older, turn-based-tactics combat of the originals, the mod Fallout Vault 13 may be the best option.

Put simply, the mod aims to recreate the entirety of the originalFallout: A Post-Nuclear Role-Playing Game, as a total-conversion mod forFallout 4.The mod is more of a “proof of concept,” representing only a part of the larger project to recreate the whole game. Despite its demo status, the amount of content it offers is impressive, not just featuring a part ofFallout’smap reimagined, but also a remake of its original skill system as well.

Unfortunately, the rest of the Vault 13 Project was canceled in late 2024, so don’t expect any updates soon. At the very least, it was great to see the team decide to release the amazing work they had done up until that point with this mod. It’s worth checking out for fans of the classicFalloutlooking to spice up their modernFallout 4experience.

6South Of The Sea - Atom’s Storm

Giving The Glowing Sea Some Love

South of the Sea - Atom’s Storm isn’t just a quest mod, but a full-on expansion ofFallout 4’s Glowing Sea and Quincy Marsh locations. Atom’s Storm is a continuation of theoriginal South of the Sea modfrom a few years prior, with added improvements and bug fixes, while also massively expanding on its content.

The mod’s questline focuses on two new factions: The Fanatics of Atom and the Swamp Folk, both of which are trying to extract radioactive material from the surrounding area. Players are given the task of searching vast networks of underground tunnels to uncover a coveted stockpile of special weapons mentioned in the Fanatics of Atom’s prophecies.

In combination, the mod’s new locations and content are a perfect lore-friendly addition to the game, being individual and unique in their own ways, while faithfully sticking close to thetraditional atmosphereof theFalloutseries.
