Summary
Daredevil: Born Againpremiered with the shocking death of a person so close to Matt Murdock — Foggy. Fans believed that it’s not the first and last loss for Matt this season.
Daredevilfans were delighted to see the trio — Matt (Charlie Cox), Foggy (Elden Henson), and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) — at Josie’s Bar to celebrate their new law firm, but it ended in a gruesome death. Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) ambushed them, leading toFoggy’s death. Matt is very close to Foggy, so his passing is not easy on him. However, the show introduces Matt’s serious girlfriend, Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva), whom he met through a blind date, arranged by his new law partner, Kirsten McDuffie. They met on a coffee blind date and they hit it off. Heather is a therapist and author, and she helped Matt deal with the loss. However, fans speculate that their relationship might not last and Matt will have to suffer another loss.
Matt and Heather’s relationship is serious. She has been instrumental in Matt’s life, in particular, in how he copes with the loss following Foggy’s death and processes the anger and grief he is feeling. However, fans are convinced that things will turn grimmer and darker for the titular superhero. Many aired their concerns about Heather’s fate in the series because they felt she would die. A report from ScreenRant coined the word “fridging.” The outlet noted that superhero stories have the “bad habit of friding” female characters, which means killing off the superhero’s girlfriend or wife. Gail Simone, a book author, was reportedly the first to use the word, and it was inspired by a scene whenGreenLanternKyle Rayner discovered his girlfriend dead inside a fridge. Fans fear that Heather will be subject to the same fate – that she will be killed off in the upcoming episodes. There are speculations thatHeather’s ties with the Fiskscould put her in danger. Mayor Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, and Vanessa are having marital issues, and Heather is their counselor. So, she might suffer from his violent nature.
Collider also shared a subtle hint that implied Heather’s gloomy fate. InDaredevil: Born AgainEpisode 4, Matt arrives home telling Heather how much she helps with his emotional battles. He tells her, “I can’t imagine you not being here.” The sweet moment showed how serious their relationship was. It was basically Matt telling his girlfriend that he couldn’t imagine living without her. And in most cases, such instances are followed by a dreadful event. Additionally, her death may be cruel since rumors suggest Muse, a cold serial killer, will be behind it. Cox said in a previous interview that Foggy’s death will spark drama and great storytelling in the series. From the look of it, Heather’s passing will make things even harder for the Man Without Fear.
Killing off Heather could deepen Matt’s internal conflict and reinforce the show’s themes of loss, grief, justice and vengeance, which are important cores to Daredevil’s character. It could also be a turning point in Matt’s arc. Dealing with another death could push him into a darker version of himself. Also, Heather’s death is imminent because even in the comics, she dies. However, Heather dies by suicide in the comics and her death haunts Matt. The show may have changed the narrative and altered Heather’s backstory, butBorn Againwill likely give Heather the same fate – death. It will surely destroy Matt, but it will also take the storyline to another level –- darker and more brutal.
