InNo Man’s Sky, the multi-tool is the player’s lifeline, and while it comes with a few technology slots, there’s never quite enough to fit every new shiny piece of tech.Technology slots are the only way players can customize their multi-toolsto cover all their needs, so having enough to modify a multi-tool is essential for any Traveler.
Technology slots don’t increase independently as players advance through the galaxy inNo Man’s Sky. Instead, players have to purchase or earn them. Sincemulti-tools handle everything from mining to defeating enemies, having enough open slots for new modules is vital for survival.
How To Increase Technology Slots on Your Multi-Tool in No Man’s Sky
There are several methods to increase a player’s technology slots on their multi-tool inNo Man’s Sky, butone of the most straightforward is to purchase a slot. To do so, players must travel to a space station and head over to where the merchants have their kiosks.
Keep an eye out fora kiosk witha multi-tool hologram. The merchant handling the kiosk is typically an alien called a Technology Merchant. Double-check that it saysMulti-Tool Researchbeneath the alien’s name.
Having found the kiosk, approach the hologram of the multi-tool and interact with it. There are three main actions a player can take.
A multi-tool expansion slot is typically a reward from doing missions.Players can also discover them out in the galaxy. If players obtain one, they can bring the slot to a technology merchant on a space stationand have them install it for free.
This isthe cheapest option to get a new technology slot for a multi-toolinNo Man’s Sky, but it also typically requires a bit of effort. Once a player installs a slot, the upgrade disappears, and they’ll need to find another expansion slot in the future to repeat the process.
The second option is to purchase a new slot. This option requires the player to spend a certain number of units. At first, the cost will be small, but as players purchase more slots across the game, the price will increase more and more. Don’t be too surprised if the price eventually reaches over 1,000,000 units.
High cost aside, this is the most straightforward way to get a new technology slot for a multi-tool. The best part is that players can keep getting a new technology slot this way. They just need to visit a new space station each time.
Finally, the third option isto upgrade the multi-tool class. This function costs nanites, which can be pretty expensiveif the player already has a decent multi-tool. Upgrading the class can improve certain stats and abilities of the multi-tool.
Where To Get Multi-Tool Expansion Slots in No Man’s Sky
Purchasing multi-tool technology slots inNo Man’s Skycan become expensive, especially if players have already expanded their multi-tools significantly.A cheaper option is to find multi-tool expansion slots.
There are several ways for players to obtain multi-tool expansion slots, but some take longer than others, andnot all of them have a great drop chance. The ways that players can earn or find a multi-tool expansion slot are as follows:
1. Completing A Manufacturing Facility’s Puzzle
While exploring a world, players may come upon a manufacturing facility inNo Man’s Sky.This point of interest can randomly generate in any world. The best wayto discover these locationsis with a signal booster.
Place a signal booster on the ground and activate it to reveal the nearby places of interest. If a manufacturing facility doesn’t pop up, pick up the signal booster and fly to a new location. While manufacturing facilities can spawn on almost any planet, they won’t appear in uncharted systems.
Planetary Charts can also sometimes show a manufacturing facility’s location.
After finding a manufacturing facility, players will need to break through the steel doors.Be careful, because this will cause a series of sentinels to spawn.Get inside as quickly as possible to avoid them.
Once inside the facility, players must interact with a console and complete a puzzle. They need to choose the correct option from the list. If they are successful, they will have the option to override the factory.
Choose the “Override Factory Unit” optionto access the multi-tool expansion slot. With the slot in hand, players can head to the nearest space station to have it installed and gain another technology slot on their multi-tool.
2. Crashed Freighter Containers
One of the most common places of interest players can encounter inNo Man’s Skyisa crashed freighter. Each freighter typically has a few containers buried in the ruins. While most containers normally offer some nanites or a few resources,a few rare ones can give a player a multi-tool expansion slot instead.
The drop chance forthis particular reward is only 4%, so players shouldn’t get their hopes up when they discover a crashed freighter. That said, if players use a signal booster and discover that a crashed freighter is nearby, it may be worth investigating.
3. Pirate Mission Board
Players who want to get their technology slots through action should check out the pirate mission board. Theseare special missionsthat have players taking out pirates or doing things in their favor.
One problem with using this method to get multi-tool technology slots is the drop rate.Pirate missions only have a 3% chanceof dropping an expansion slot. That’s great news for those who want to fight a lot of pirates, though.
Players should head to the Space Anomaly and access the Nexus to see if any pirate-related missions are active so they can earn an expansion slot. Otherwise, players must explore outlaw systems and seek their treasure there.
Players should also keep anypirate transponders that drop. They can donate these to the Mercenary’s Guild, and if players can gain enough renown with them, then they’ll get a multi-tool expansion slot as a reward.
4. Nexus Missions
Another way to get an expansion slot for a multi-tool inNo Man’s Skyisto complete certain Nexus missions. Some of the more advanced and challenging missionswill often offer really lucrative rewardsand may even offer an expansion slot directly, or will have a Factory Override tool that players can use at manufacturing facilities to get an expansion slot.
First, summon the Space Anomaly and enter it to see what the Nexus is offering. Head to the back of the station on the ground floor and access the Nexus to see what missions are available. These missions are usually meant for a group to do together, but players can complete them solo, too.
When searching for available missions, look to the right to see the mission’s rewards. There’s onlya 2% chancethat one of these missions will offer an expansion slot as a reward, so grab it if it’s there.
5. Buried Cache
Although very rare, with a drop rate chance of 2%, it is possible to find a multi-tool expansion slot in a buried cache. InNo Man’s Sky, a buried cache is a chest that players can uncover withtheir terrain manipulator.
Players must use their analysis visor to find a buried cache.Look for an icon that resembles a chest. If it says “Buried Cargo” or “Buried Cache,” then that’s the target. Head to the area and use the terrain manipulator to dig it out of the ground, then access it.With any luck, an expansion slot will drop.
While there are a few other methods to find a multi-tool expansion slot inNo Man’s Sky, their drop rates are abysmal. Completing certain missions might reward a player with an expansion slot, but the chance of that is only 1%. Even worse,NPCs have a 0.7% chanceof giving an expansion slot as a reward. Finally, players have a 0.3% chanceof getting an expansion slot when opening a suspicious packet.
Expanding the multi-tool with technology slots allows players to craft powerful weapons and helpful tools. Like anything else inNo Man’s Sky,it’s worth keeping an eye openand exploring everything.
