Unless they decide toexperience the game with Canon Mode enabled, players will need to make plenty of decisions inAssassin’s Creed Shadows. The first of these comes at the very beginning of the prologue when one of the game’s co-protagonists comes face-to-face with Oda Nobunaga.

Nobunaga mentions that he’d love to be able to communicate with Diogo and laments the fact that his guest does not speak Japanese. It’s at this point thatAssassin’s Creed Shadowsplayers will be given the option to confirm Nobunaga’s suspicions and tell the influential daimyo that they understand him.

Should You Choose I Understand You Well or Say Nothing? (Spoiler Free)

Without going into too much detail,it makes no difference whether players choose I understand you well or say nothing. Whileplaying the game with Canon Mode enabled, Diogo chooses to speak up here and tell Nobunaga that he understands, so this could be seen as the “correct” decision. However, whether or not players decide to speak up has no bearing whatsoever on the main story and only has a minor impact on the way that this particular encounter unfolds.

What Happens if You Choose I Understand You Well?

If players tell Nobunaga that they understand him well, he’ll ask to speak with Diogo alone and quiz him about his skin color. He then asks aboutDiogo’s relationship with the Portuguesebefore calling Valignano and the others back into the room. From this point onwards, events play out exactly the same as if players had chosen to say nothing, with Nobunaga agreeing to Valignano’s request. As mentioned above, this is the canon version of events.

What Happens if You Say Nothing?

If players decide to say nothing, Nobunaga will reveal that he knows that Diogo understands Japanese and ask him why he lied. Here, players will have the option to blame Valignana for Diogo’s deception or tell Nobunaga that he is still learning the Japanese language and culture. This second decision doesn’t matter either, as whichever option players choose, Nobunaga will agree to Valignano’s request on the condition that Diogo stays with him.

There is no “correct” decision for this second choice, as the events leading up to it are not considered canon.
