Invinciblealways wanted to be the picture-perfect superhero, to break the mold that occurred after the bloodshed his father, Omni-Man spilled. Mark Grayson’s desire to bring nothing but goodness into the world might be foolish, but theInvinciblecomics showcase how hard it’s going to be for the superhero to keep his ethics of life in line when it comes to doing what needs to be done.
As such, some vitally important kills in theInvinciblecomics committed by Mark Grayson fundamentally shapehim as a hero and define who he is. After a battle with Conquest, Invincible deemed that he wouldkill anyone to keep his family and the planet safe, so who has he killed to make good on that promise?
7The Immortal
Mark is Forced to Kill an Old Ally in the Future to Save the World
When two time-travelers interrupt a date between Eve and Mark, it soon becomes Mark’s new reality that he is burdened with the responsibility to take his life. Mark is forced into the future, where he must take out the tyrant that has killed millions of people to control and oppress the people of Earth, and it just so happens that the tyrant is King Immortal, an old ally.
The Immortal has been left in charge of Earth for centuries, and it’s clear that the power and responsibility have driven him mad. The Immortal begs Mark to kill him, and Mark states that’s not what heroes do, but eventually, he’s left with no choice to save a potential future reality. This kill shapes Invincible’s views, as it’s technically his first consensual kill that shows him that sometimes, he has toget his hands dirty to save the world.
6Angstrom Levy
Mark’s First Kill Showed Him He Must Do Whatever it Takes to Save His Family
Angstrom Levy wasn’t actually killed by Invincible, but for the longest time, Mark didn’t know that to be the case. In reality, Mark thought he had killed Angstrom Levy in a shocking event that saw him beat the villain to death, believing him to be stronger than he actually was while the two were stranded on a desolate planet amidstdimension hopping.
Invincible greatly regrets killing Angstrom Levy, and it plays on his mind on a daily occurrence. However, he had to do it to save his mom and his brother. Yet, when Mark finds out Angstrom is alive, and that the Invincible War is a result of him being alive, Mark realizes that maybe he should have killed him and made sure he stayed dead, as this kill, or lack thereof, resulted in the death of thousands around the globe for what Angstrom Levy did next.
5Conquest
The Oldest Viltrumite Has the Time of His Life Fighting Invincible
Conquest is another important kill to Invincible, as it’s the first Viltrumite that Mark managed to beat in a fight. Sure,Atom Eve helped, and the adrenaline that Mark had from Eve’s potential death and the fight itself certainly helped (since Viltrumites cannot obtain adrenaline, as that’s exclusive to Mark’s human DNA), but the main importance of the battle is that Mark willingly, and wanted to kill Conquest.
Mark’s kill of Conquest saved countless lives, and the fact that his girlfriend and his brother are alive as a result showed Mark that he cannot hesitate anymore and that anyone who threatens his family or the world will be killed by him without exception.
4Rus Livingston
An Innocent Astronaut, Trapped as the Sequid Hivemind
The Sequids were subservient aliens on the planet Mars, and when astronauts ventured to the planet, the Sequids found a way off of it thanks to these valuable human hosts that could be controlled as a catalyst for the hive mind, providing an army of Sequids with the abilities and numbers they need to invade and conquer.
When Rus Livingston invades Earth with the Sequids, Robot discusses a plan to free the humans from alien control to both spare Rus and take care of the Sequids. However, after the battle with Conquest, Mark isn’t taking any chances, so he kills Rus on the spot. This kill shows how Mark sticks by his word, but also shows a sinister side of him – and that perhaps the innocent heroism of Invincible is cracking, since Rus was innocent, and there was definitelyanother way to save him.
3Dinosaurus
Mark’s Work with a Villain Ends in Unforgivable Disaster
Dinosaurus was a strong and intelligent villain to the world, who would commit terrorism and other atrocities under the guise of fixing the world. Dinosaurus believed that through his crimes, he could save humanity and stop plagues of the world, like pollution, which is why he targeted New Vegas and had other plans to glass cities that would benefit the planet and in the long run, help humanity. This is why Mark decided to free Dinosaurus andwork alongside himoutside of the jurisdiction of the GDA.
Mark’s independence here to think working with Dinosaurus was a good thing, was completely foolish, and Dinosaurus eventually detonated bombs in the North Pole to cause mass floodings that would wipe out so much life. As a result, Mark killed Dinosaurus, but he was left with scars – knowing what Dinosaurus did was his fault. This kill shows how Mark’s independent heroism gets innocent people killed.
2Onaan
A Kill that Made Mark Realise that Being a Hero is
Onaan is the proud son of the exiled Grand Regent Thragg. As a half-Viltrumite and half-Thraxan, Onaan grew up with his powers fast, and would be immensely loyal to his father, who showed no love to the boy, but a demand of his best work for war. As a result, Onaan became sadistic and enjoyed killing to an immense degree.
Onaan helped his father track down Mark, Eve, and their daughter Terra, and Onaan saw twisted pleasure in killing them all, which is why Mark didn’t hesitate to squeeze his neck until his head popped off while exclaiming that “Being a hero is bull####.” Killing Onaan is a moment that shows Mark doesn’t care about the principles of a hero anymore, and he’s only concerned about keeping his family safe, no matterhow bloody his hands have to getfor it.
1Thragg
The Former Grand Regent Who Brings a Viltrumite Army to Earth
Grand Regent Thragg is the most dangerous Viltrumite of them all. After all, this is a man who managed to take down Battle Beast and beat Omni-Man, Oliver, and Invincible nearly to an inch of their lives in a 3-on-1. Thragg is immensely loyal to the old Viltrum Empire, which is why he brings an army of his own against the newly formed empire from Nolan of half-Viltrumite and half-Thraxan soldiers who will fight anddie for their unloving father.
Nolan’s compassion ends up getting him killed in a fight with Thragg, which leaves Invincible with no choice but to fly Thragg into the sun and fight him to the bitter end. Mark’s fight with Thragg was certainly suicide, as the sun scorched his skin and bone. However, Mark’s victory cemented him as the strongest Viltrumite alive and made himEmperor of a new age.
