Summary
As a fan of clever horror movies that balance kills with humor, and as someone who has seen most of Jenna Ortega’s projects, I really enjoyedWednesdayseason 2. I was also excited to hear Ortega’s comments aboutthe second season heading in a darker directionthan the first. This feels like the right path for the hitNetflixseries, especially since the Addams Family movies have always been fairly bleak. After all, this is a family that regularly talks about death and other grim topics.
Now thatWednesdayseason 2 is coming sometime in 2025, Ortega is talking a little bit more about what fans can expect, and she recently gave an interview about the tone of the new episodes. I loved hearing Ortega share thatoneWednesdayseason 2 episode is inspired by slasher films, and now I’m wondering which ones.
I Think Wednesday Season 2 Could Be Inspired By These Slasher Movies
In an interview withCollider,Jenna Ortega talked about the tone ofWednesdayseason 2and said that some scenes are inspired by thepopular 1980s horror moviesProm NightandCarrie. Ortega said:
“I just feel like there are a lot of scenes and frames, and there’s a whole episode based off of slashers, and we make a lot of horror references. So, everything about it, I feel like we kind of had a little bit more trust, and therefore, we felt like we could do bigger, more elaborate sequences, which is nice.”
SinceWednesdayseason 1 was both funny and creepy, I think the slasher movie-inspired episode could beinspired by theScreamfranchise.I don’t think theScreamfilms are scary, but I don’t think that’s a problem, either. BothWednesdayandScreamare eerie and it sounds like, based on Ortega’s comments, season 2 could feature horror movie imagery and dialogue about the genre.
I think it would be cool if theWednesdayseason 2 slasher episode featured tropes from theScreammovies, such asWednesday Addams being the final girlandher mysterious season 2 stalkeracting like Ghostface. The stalker couldfollow the Evil Phone tropeand text and phone the characters, which would scare them. But, of course, Wednesday would remain as fearless and confident as ever. Maybe in one scene, the stalker chases Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers), and she jokes about how horror movie characters make silly decisions that cost them their lives.
I would also be happy ifWednesdayseason 2 included references topopular modern slashers such asHalloweenandTerrifier.MaybeWednesday could talk about iconic villainslike Michael Myers andArt The Clown, who may or may not be human. Ifthere was a Halloween episode, maybe Wednesday could see someone dressed up like Michael Myers or Art The Clown at Nevermore Academy. She could wonder if they’re the stalker or just an innocent student or teacher, which would be entertaining.
I appreciatethe formula that slashers followand think it’s fun to findthe common tropes in these movies, from the big parties that the main and minor characters attend to the idea that the killer is hiding in plain sight. It would be funny ifWednesday joked about the predictable nature of slashersand how she doesn’t understand the decisions that final girls like Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) make.
What Horror Tropes Are Used In Wednesday Season 1?
Wednesdayseason 1 features several horror tropes, such asa scary monster lurking in the background,a murder mystery that needs to be solved, and Wednesday Addams being a Goth character. Although I want Wednesday to continue making biting and hilarious remarks in every scene she’s in, I’m looking forward to the dark direction of the new episodes. I thinkthe reveal that Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) is the Hyde Monsteris effective, and I hope thatWednesdayhas a memorable scene that matches that one.
I thinkWednesdayseason 2 can please slasher fansif the main mystery is even more gripping than the first season’s and if the characters laugh at common tropes. Since Nevermore Academy has students and teachers who are rebels who don’t fit in, I can see them poking fun at the genre, no problem. Now that Wednesday has been at Nevermore for a while, she is more comfortable in her new environment, and she can devote even more time to finding her stalker. I would also be impressed ifWednesdayseason 2 featured a big, creative twist, which is something I love seeing in slashers, whether a brand new film ora long-running franchise.
