Arthur ‘Trinity Killer’ Mitchellis one of thebest villains in the Dexter-verse, and it’s been very difficult for any actor to come close to theiconic status of John Lithgow, unless the name is Dexter Morgan, of course. Lithgow first played the evil killer in 2009, in the much-praised fourth season of the show. However, his stint was short, as Dexter sought revenge on Trinity for killing his wife Rita. After listening to some calm music while wrapped up in plastic on a kill table, Trinity was dispatched and thrown into the ocean. However, he returned in Harrison Morgan’s flashback scene in the limited series,New Blood, andLithgow recently confirmedTrinity’s returnin the new series,Resurrectionin an interview withVariety:
I just went back to do a day. They’re rebooting the entire Michael C. Hall version of ‘Dexter.’ And it turns out he didn’t die after all. I come back sort of as a phantom, as he gradually comes to life on a hospital bed.
The last vision Dexter could wish for when he regains consciousness is that of the Trinity Killer. However, fans will be very happy to see Dexter’s old foe again, even if it is just a brief cameo at the start of the series. Lithgow’s career has blossomed since he first played Trinity all those years ago, but it sounds like he’s still game for more killer antics because he’s also voicing Arthur Mitchell in the upcoming Trinity prequel.
The Trinity Killer’s Return Could Be Seen As Fan Service But That’s Actually Fine
Dexter Morgan has been known to experience deadly apparitions from time to time, whether it’s his sister, Debra Morgan, or adoptive father, Harry. Dexter’s ghost can take on any form, so it makes perfect sense for the Trinity killer to return to take the form of the ‘phantom’, albeit briefly when the serial killer with a code emerges from his former death bed inResurrection. It might seem like fan service to bring John Lithgow back as the infamous Trinity Killer, and it probably is, but that’s actually not a bad thing.Trinity is a fan favorite, and the Dexter-verse has arguably not been able to match John Lithgow’s performance when it comes to the big bad villains in later seasons.
This could be a sign that Resurrection is about to introduce a villain worthy of being a successor to Trinity, and John Lithgow’s cameo role is a prelude to this. Peter Dinklage is playing a mysterious new character in the new show called Leon Prater, who could end up being the new villain. Dinklage certainly has the acting chops to match Lithgow’s iconic villain, but it really depends on how strong the story is. The fourth season of Dexter had a really strong story, and Trinity was the perfect foil forMichael C. Hall’s Dexter. Don’t rule out future appearances by Lithgow in future seasons of Resurrection, alongside his dulcit tones appearing in the Trinity prequel series.
