Summary
With the end ofSeveranceSeason 2, the sci-fi drama wrapped up an impressive season of television that pushed the show to the upper echelon of its medium, beingpropelled by a stunning season finalecentering on the mystery of Cold Harbor. Furthermore, the finale saw Gemma escape the severed floor at the cost of Mark remaining behind to stay with Helly R., prompting many questions from fans ofSeverance, with Season 3 setting up to be a season for the ages.
While the finale brought many queries, the whole of Season 2 has many mysteries to do with several prominent characters, the organization of Lumon, and their secretive operations. Here are thebiggest unanswered questions left by Season 2 ofSeverance.
7Where Are Mark S. And Helly R. Heading?
The Runaway Couple Will Look To Keep Their Love Afloat While In A Tough Predicament
The dramatic bombshell of an endingthat produced the abandonment of Gemma by Innie Mark as he and Helly R. run away and savor their love was truly bittersweet, with the runaway lovers now garnering a new enemy, their Outies. Thanks to the severed marching band and Dylan’s heroics, the Innies appear to have secured control of the severed floor, but for how long is anyone’s guess. Ultimately, Mark S. and Helly are going with the wind, hoping to keep their love alive at any cost, and if it’s to stay under Lumon’s control in order to see their lives and relationship continue, then so be it.
After Mark’s bloody escapade, aided by Helly, which leads to a dead Mr. Drummond, Lumon surely won’t be kind to the couple, with Mark and Helly’s tricky situation being of most importance heading into the next season.
6What Will Gemma Do Now?
After Mark’s Heartbreaking Actions, Gemma Will Need To Act Fast To Avoid Being Caught
Severance’s Season 2 finale produced several jaw-dropping scenes that left viewers speechless. However, its final sequence involves Gemma escaping the severed flooronly to be abandoned by Mark; his Innie opts for Helly in a heartwrenching ending that sees Gemma continue to suffer shortly after her reunion with her husband. Gemma’s traumatic experience and sudden shock at Mark’s actions leave the character in a flustered spot. As such, one of the biggest conundrums looming from Season 2 is how Gemma will navigate the situation that immediately follows this moment.
For Gemma, the big questions revolving around her next steps are whether she will be able to find her way out of the Lumon building and if she can reunite and link up with Devon and Ms. Cobel, with the duo waiting in the wings. With Gemma and Mark now reversing roles, Gemma may play a key part in trying to extract Mark from the severed floor if the Innies manage to rebel and fight for their right to live, creating a fascinating dynamic that will see Gemma gain plenty of screen time.
5What Will Jame Eagan And Lumon Do In The Wake Of Their Plans Being Foiled?
Lumon Will Likely Act Impulsively To Rectify The Loss Of Gemma And Her Tests Being Incomplete
Lumon’s longstanding experiments with Gemma come crashing down in a tumultuous fashion inSeverance’s Season 2 finale as the Innie and Outie versions of Mark work together to save his wife before Gemma can complete Cold Harbor, which would have seemingly accomplished Lumon’s objective. Much can be thought about why Lumon values Gemma and Mark so much as test subjects, with their experiences of grief due to their failure to have a child possibly being a target for Lumon to exploit in order to achieve their goals of killing off pain and trauma.
With much of Lumon in disarray with the revolt of the Innies and the death of one ofthe company’s most senior workers in Drummond, Lumon will likely look to regain control as fast as possible. The remarks of Jame Eagan towards Helly in the finale possibly gleam the idea of using his daughter as Lumon’s next test subject with Gemma now being out of the picture.
4What Is Lumon’s End Goal?
Lumon Looks To Be Revolutionizing Society Through Technological And Scientific Means
While more is learned by the end of Season 2, the secrecy of Lumon and their ultimate aims and objectives are still a ways off from being discovered. The reveal of Lumon aiming to create 25 separate consciousnesses within Gemma, with Cold Harbor, a significant trial relating to Gemma’s pregnancy struggles, gives a glimpse of Lumon’s potential end goal.
As referenced in passing, Lumon is attempting to eradicate emotions such as grief and pain, with the company utilizing Gemma, a despair-ridden victim, as their ideal testee. If Lumon was planning on creating the perfect human devoid of such emotions, it would align with Kier Eagan’s vision, taming the Four Tempers in the process.
3What Will Become Of Mr. Milchick?
The Stern But Exuberant Severed Floor Manager Finds Himself At A Crossroads
PerhapsSeverance’s most intriguing character, Mr. Milchick has endured an eventful season, with the Lumon employee stepping up to the plate of severed floor manager after the departure of Cobel. However, Milchick’s promotion was not as positive and enlightening as he would have hoped, with the internal pressures from Lumon and the MDR department’s reckless abandonment, particularly with Mark showing slow progress on Cold Harbor, putting Milchick in trouble with his superiors.
Along with the stress that comes with the job, Milchick has been checked by Drummond on the use of his extravagant vocabulary, with Milchick showing signs of frustration in the show’s Season 2 finale, wherea voiced Kier shows disapproval of Milchick’s language. In his current predicament, the character appears outnumbered in the finale due to Dylan and the marching band uniting, leaving Milchick to potentially be a hostage to the Innie’s demands. Another prospect that may transpire is Milchick’s defection from his employers in a show of rebellion. His annoyance towards Lumon could see the floor manager aiding Mark, Helly, and Dylan in their fight to survive.
2Why Are The Goats So Important?
Lumon’s Sacrifices Are Linked To Kier, But The Reasoning Remains A Mystery
While Season 1 dropped a surprise with the inclusion of goats on the severed floor, confusing much of the audience, the second season further explored the goats as the Mammalians Nurturable department, run by Lorne, was seen as in charge of observing and caring for the animals. In the finale, audiences get a glimpse into Lumon’s use of goats as Drummond goes to oversee Lorne’s killing of a selected goat.
Seemingly being a sacrifice that, in Drummond’s own words, is intended to guide Gemma to the ways of Kier, Lumon’s practices only serve tomake the company appear more like a cultthan a forward-thinking technological behemoth. With Drummond being eliminated and Gemma fleeing, the role of the MN department going forward remains to be seen, with the true reasoning for the slaughter of goats conceivably having a greater purpose than being a stereotypical cult ritual Lumon engages in.
1Will Irving Return To MDR?
The Status Of Irving Remains Unknown
One of the only missing parts of the Season 2 finale was Irving, 1/4 of the MDR team, who was sent away from Kier by Burt Goodman in an attempt to save him from the prying eyes of Lumon. Ever since Irving’s assault on Helena, proving that the heir to the Eagan Empire took over from Helly R., Irving has been on thin ice, with his firing from Lumon and the company’s investigation into him seeing the character come into danger.
With his former coworker Innies upstaging a coup on the severed floor set to cross over into Season 3, it would be ofno surprise to see Irving return to the fold. The character also has unfinished business with his cherished Burt. As such, there is a lot left on the table for one ofSeverance’s fan favorites.
