Almost every major tech company has dipped its toes into the AI and large language model (LLM) sectors in the past few years. As one of the biggest corporations in the world, Microsoft has naturally been exploring AI-driven solutions as well. 2019 saw the Xbox parent company forming a strategic partnership with ChatGPT creator OpenAI, which has warranted tens of billions of dollars worth of investment so far. Microsoft thendebuted the Copilot AI assistant for Windows 11in May 2023, with the LLM only having advanced ever since.

Now, Microsoft’s gaming division is getting a dedicated AI assistant in the form of Copilot for Gaming. One of the AI sidekick’s core features is real-time assistance, where Copilot for Gaming analyzes gameplay and actively provides strategic recommendations to players. A concept demo shows Copilot for Gaming coaching anOverwatch 2player by suggesting optimal hero picksbased on team composition and pointing out positioning errors. Microsoft To Launch Limited Version of Copilot for Gaming Next Month, But Only for a Select Group of Gamers

Since Copilot for Gaming can see what the player is doing in real time, the AI companion can tailor its advice to specific scenarios. It can even download and install games, as well as provide recaps if the user hasn’t played in a while. However, not all the demonstrated Copilot for Gaming features will be available at launch. Microsoft plans to roll out atest version of Copilot for Gaming in April 2025through theXbox mobile app, exclusively forXbox Insiders. Microsoft intends to collate user feedback and refine Copilot for Gaming over time, with a broader expansion of the AI assistant expected in the future.

At the moment, much of Copilot for Gaming’s abilities appear conceptual rather than a direct representation of what players will get. It’s worth noting, though, that the pace of AI improvement has been nothing but stratospheric in recent years. Microsoft is clearly very committed to AI integration in games, so what seems a bit too ambitious for Copilot right now may well be commonplace in the near future. The company also revealed theMuse generative AI modellast month, which could be a boon for bringing older games to modern hardware.
