One of the most exciting aspects of the modernMortal Kombatgames is their post-launch DLC. Between story expansions and new playable characters, NetherRealm Studios has found a way to keep fans invested in the series. Unfortunately, with the release ofMortal Kombat 1’s most recent guest character —Terminator 2’s T-1000 — players are bracing themselves for a drought of official content.
While NetherRealm initially led fans to believe thatMortal Kombat 1would be supported for years to come, recent leaks have suggested thatupcoming DLC for the game has been canceled. This was apparently due to lackluster sales for the game’sKhaos Reignsexpansion. If true, this would be a devastating blow, as there were several rumored guest characters like the Doom Slayer and Harley Quinn that didn’t make it into the first two Kombat Packs. The supposed cancelation has fans justifiably upset, but a well-timed crossover could still provide some levity for the community.
The Mortal Kombat Roster Arrives in Fortnite and Rocket League
Fortnitealready treatedMortal Kombatfans to a collaboration earlier this season that brought Sub-Zero to the game. Besides having a full set of cosmetics in the current battle pass,Sub-Zero also dropped a new mythic item in Battle Royalethat lets players walk on water, perform ice slides, and even pummel enemies with a frozen spinal cord. If the Sub-Zero items weren’t cool enough for players,Fortniteis continuing to build upon this collab in meaningful ways.
A New Wave of Mortal Kombat Cosmetics
Last week,Fortnite added three moreMortal Kombatcharacters to the item shop: Scorpion, Raiden, and Kitana. Alongside these skins and their associated gear, multiple new emotes have been added to the game that let players conjure lightning like Raiden, recreate the Test Your Might mini-game, or perform a family-friendly fatality. For players looking to customize their in-game cars, Sub-Zero and Scorpion-themed cosmetics for the Lamborghini Countach car model are available in the shop and can be used in bothFortniteandRocket League.
The Fortnite Island Hosts Its Own Mortal Kombat Tournament
These new items are great additions to the game — even ifFortniteis once again removing characters' backblings and selling them as separate items — butFortnitestill isn’t done with this crossover. On April 1, Battle Royale will be getting a sizableMortal Kombatupdate. The mode will receive aMortal Kombat-themed questline and new POIs based on iconicMortal Kombatstages like the Dead Pool, the Living Forest, and the Pit. Each match, players exploring these locations will have the chance to run across a new Scorpion boss. If they manage to defeat him, he will drop an exclusive medallion power-up and the Scorpion’s Kombat Kit mythic item. The mythic lets players reel enemies in with Scorpion’s iconic spear attack and perform melee combos against them.
This might not be the news thatMortal Kombatfans were hoping for, but new content that gets new players interested in the series is far from a bad thing. TheMortal Kombatitems inFortnite’s shop will leave the game on April 21. The current battle pass featuring Sub-Zero will be available until May 2, when it will supposedly be replaced with anewStar Wars-themed pass.
