Summary

There are many types of jutsu inNaruto, and one of the most interesting is genjutsu, a way to use chakra to trap enemies in illusions from which they will find it difficult to escape. Kishimoto is very creative when it comes to world building inNaruto.

However, there are ninjas who are very resistant to genjutsu, as expected (or else, genjutsu users would be overpowered, and shinobi would likely only train to become genjutsu users). A character that, maybe surprisingly, is quite resistant to genjutsu is Sakura. But how did she develop this resistance?

What Is Genjutsu in Naruto?

Genjutsu is atype of jutsu that requires chakra manipulationto perform (the only type of jutsu that doesn’t use chakra is taijutsu). It affects the target’s mind, creating illusions. “Gen”,in Japanese, means “illusion”, “phantom”, “vision” (at least in this case).

Instead of controlling their own chakra, the users of genjutsu control the chakra flow in their opponent’s/target’s bodies, and use it to affect their senses and make them fall for illusions. Typically, genjutsu is performed through a medium, such as a finger or an eye — the Sharingan, for example, allows users to perform many genjutsu.

Sasuke’s Rinnegan and Sharingan

There are a few ways in which a victim can counter or break free from genjutsu, like suffering pain not caused by the genjutsu, disrupting their own chakra to a point that it dissipates the genjutsu(the victim can do this if they realize they are inside a genjutsu, or else an ally should do it for them) — in the anime, strong smells can also bring a victim back from it. Sharingan users have even more ways to free themselves from genjutsu, once they can more easily realize they are under its influence.

Early Sign of Sakura’s Resistance to Genjutsu

In the manga, when she is still in Team 7, Kakashi notes that Sakura has always been good at controlling her chakra, which gives her a great advantage over her peers. At the time, he even claimed that she was better than Sasuke and was able to release herself from weaker genjutsu.

How Could Sakura Have Developed Genjutsu Resistance

The series never explicitly addresses this, but since chakra control is important to breaking free from genjutsu, Sakura was able to refine her skillswhile training with Tsunade.Medical ninjutsu, the area in which she specializes, requires advanced chakra control, and Sakura becomes one of the best in the field. It is said that she has perfect control of her chakra.

Thus, despitenever focusing on countering genjutsu, her training likely allowed her to develop a strong resistance to it, as she improved her chakra control abilities in order to perform medical jutsu. In sum, Sakura is probably resistant to genjutsu because she has developed her chakra control to its highest potential.

Resistance Does Not Mean Immunity

It is important to note that being resistant to genjutsu does not mean being fully immune to it. Sakura can fall for it, as she did by the end of the original manga, when Sasuke places her in a genjutsu created by the Rinnegan.

Anyway, with all her chakra control, if Sakura alsotried to specialize in genjutsu, she would probably become a stronger user too, as her chakra control gives her a massive potential in this field too.
