Summary
Free-to-play first-person shooterFragPunkis off to a strong start on Steam, where it peaked at over 110,000 concurrent players in early March 2025.FragPunk’s impressive player numbers also seem to have already resulted in quite a bit of revenue.
Developed by Bad Guitar Studio, a division ofNetEase subsidiaryThunder Fire Studio,FragPunkis a colorful hero shooter for two five-player teams. Its closed alpha and beta tests were previously completed between June and October 2024. The game then had its full-fledged PC launch on March 6.
Three days later,FragPunkalready has some impressive unofficial player numbers to its name. According toSteamDBdata, the hero shooter has steadily grown in popularity over its first 72 hours on the market, setting a new concurrent player record every single day. Most recently, it peaked at 113,946 concurrent players on Valve’s platform, ranking as the 16thmost popular game on Steamon March 9.
FragPunk’s Steam Reviews Are Now ‘Mostly Positive’
Another encouraging sign for Bad Guitar Studio’s debut title is that its Steam user reviews have shifted from “Mixed” at launch to “Mostly Positive” three days later. Its initial community rating was less positive on account ofplayer backlash prompted byFragPunk’s aggressive monetizationpractices, which include two different memberships, a pair of premium battle passes, and nine types of currencies, among other elements. However, it appears that many of the players who left negative reviews on launch day have moved on, as user scores from the following two days have been largely positive. The game now holds a 71.15% positive rating from 10,206 reviews.
FragPunk Already Seems To Be Making a Lot of Money
Aggressive or not,FragPunk’s monetization practices seem to already be paying dividends, as the hero shooter currently ranks sixth on Steam’s Top Sellers list, which tracks overall in-game spending over the past several days. The only five Steam products that have made more money over the second weekend of March 2025 areCounter-Strike 2,Split Fiction,Monster Hunter Wilds,REPO, and the Steam Deck—in that order.
While Valve’s platform is likely the driving force behindFragPunk’s current momentum, SteamDB data doesn’t tell the whole story, not least because the scraper only tracks the activity of public Steam accounts. Moreover,FragPunkis also available on the Epic Games Store. Bad Guitar Studio previously planned to treat the hero shooter to a day-one multi-platform release, but ended updelayingFragPunk’s console ports at the last minute. The developer has yet to commit to a new release date for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the free-to-play game.
