It was finally revealed which streaming service will air the upcomingMobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuXto the international public. Despite its hard-to-write name,GQuuuuuuXis a highly anticipatedGundamseries, especially withthe involvement ofEvangelioncreator Hideaki Anno and Studio Khara(which now owns theEvangelionIP).
Some fans have already gotten a taste of what the series will feel like, as the prologue movie is now screening in North America. It compiles the first four episodes of the series, which is a lot if the show is only one-cour long (about 12 episodes).
Where Will Gundam GQuuuuuuX Be Available?
It was announced thatAmazon Prime Video will stream the series globally and exclusively. Furthermore, they confirmed that the episodes will be added to the service simultaneously with the Japanese broadcast,both subbed and dubbed. Given how manyGundamseries are available on Crunchyroll, it is a surprise that Prime Video will stream this one.
Gundam by Evangelion Studio Release Date
The anime isset to be released on April 8 (Tuesday). Prime Video hasn’t confirmed the release time yet. In Japan, theywill air at 12:29 AM JST(technically starting on April 9). It’s possible that the episodes will drop on Prime Video at the same time.
GQuuuuuuX Plot and Timeline
The series is set in an alternate timeline ofGundam 0079(the firstGundamseries), whereZeon won the warand started mass-producing Mobile Suits. In this scenario, Amate Yuzuriha lives in a space colony and is drawn into Clan Battles after meeting a refugee called Nyaan. Clan Battles are illegal fights using Mobile Suits. And, of course, this leads to trouble with the police.
Hideaki Anno’s Involvement in GQuuuuuuX
EvangelioncreatorHideaki Annois one of the scriptwriters of the series, along withYojo Enokido, who worked in a fewEvangelionmedia. The director of the series isKazuya Tsurumaki, who co-directed theRebuild of Evangelionmovies.
The series is a co-production between Sunrise and Studio Khara. It is said that Tsurumaki was actually the one who pitched the project to Sunrise, and he didn’t expect it to be greenlit.
The prologue movie had a great commercial reception in Japan and became one of the highest-grossingGundammovies. The reception in the US has been good,at least within niche audiences. It may not be far-fetched to imagine that this series could be similar toWitch of Mercuryin terms of introducing the franchise to a new audience.
Amazon Prime Video also streams the complete Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy.
