One of Konami’smost beloved RPG franchises, theSuikodenseries currently consists of five main titles and six spin-offs, though many of the latter weren’t released outside of Japan. Inspired by the classical Chinese novelWater Margin, theSuikodengames are somewhat similar toFinal Fantasy, in that the games are not chronological but share similar themes and some overlapping characters. While the series enjoyed consistent releases for some time after the first game dropped in 1995, the last mainline entry was released in 2006, and the latest spin-off was launched outside of Japan not long after, in 2009. Fans are now getting their first glimpse at the next addition to the series, though it may not be what many anticipated.
As announced by publisher Konami and developer Mythril (viaGematsu),Suikoden Star Leapwill be released for iOS and Android in the future, though no concrete release date has yet been announced. The free-to-play title will be the first game in the franchise tailored specifically for mobile devices and will include in-game microtransactions and featurepixel art graphicsreminiscent of Square Enix’s recent HD-2D remakes.Suikoden Star Leapwill also feature full voice acting for its main cast, with popular actors like Akio Otsuka (Thorkell,Vinland Saga) and Fairouz Ai (Power,Chainsaw Man) set to appear. “A new addition to theSuikodenseries, after a long silence,” wrote Aki Shimizu, who previously worked on the manga version ofSuikoden 3. “I’m already looking forward to meeting him…and her…and all the others.”
Suikoden Star Leap Announced for iOS and Android
According to the game’s official website,Suikoden Star Leapwill tell the story of the Rune of Change, one of 27 True Runes rumored to have created the world itself. The game’s protagonist is the son of a village chief who takes charge after a sudden assault, teaming up with others to embark on a journey to bring peace back to the land. The game’s theme song,Campanula, is performed by Kaho Nakamura, who previously voiced Suzu Naito inthe 2021 anime filmBelle.
Suikoden Star Leapisn’t the only game in the franchise that fans can look forward to.Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remasterwill be releasedon March 6 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC. The updated versions of the first two games will include additional environmental sound effects, updated interfaces, new character portraits, and more.
