Originally released in April 2013 in Japan before its Western release in June 2014,Tomodachi Lifewas a 3DS social simulator that featured Nintendo’s iconic Mii avatars. The Miis were called Islanders in-game and had unique personalities and traits that set them apart, including their voices and their walking speeds.Tomodachi Lifealso moved in real time and encouraged players to pick up the game at different times of the day to see how the Mii Islanders interact with one another. The game also featured StreetPass functionality for sending items. However,Tomodachi Lifelacked a few featuresthat left players wanting more content.
Althoughthe Nintendo Direct featured news fromPokemon Legends: Z-Aand other known games in development, the episode’s final game trailer was a surprise to viewers. After a quick sizzle reel of different third-party games, Nintendo Direct host Shinya Takahashi revealed a one-minute teaser forTomodachi Life: Living The Dream. The trailer showed a glimpse of an island filled with Mii citizens conversing about their day and participating in group activities like dancing and exercising. Another Mii character took a moment to smell and admire a flower field while two other citizens argued and started throwing items at each other.
Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream Launches On Nintendo Switch In 2026
The trailer then showed the logo forTomodachi Life: Living The Dreambefore cutting to the loud sound of a large Mii avatar running toward another. The gigantic Mii asked if the smaller one wanted to talk before the trailer revealed that the odd sequence was another Mii’s dream.Tomodachi Life: Living The Dreamwill launch sometime in 2026, so fans must wait for more information in future Nintendo Direct episodes. Takahashi then welcomed Shigeru Miyamoto to talk about the Nintendo Today mobile app to end the broadcast.
Thankfully, Nintendo fans will not have to wait long for more news, as the highly anticipatedNintendo Switch 2 Direct will air next Wednesday April 2. Given that the Switch 2 will be out by the timeTomodachi Life: Living the Dreamis released, it remains to be seen what Nintendo will do for players on Switch and Switch 2 consoles.

Like its predecessor, this game also takes place on an island inhabited by various Miis. However, Tomodachi Life features many more locations than the first game for even more varied in-game activities and interactions.Get in-game currency by interacting with the islanders, resolving their problems, and giving gifts. In-game currency can also be gained by going to the Fountain for donations from the islanders and selling non-interactive items gained from Miis at the Pawn Shop. The player can unlock special items and transport islanders using SpotPass and StreetPass.
