Summary

Obsidian Entertainment has recently revealed that the firstPillars of Eternitywill get a turn-based mode sometime in 2025. This is a fairly surprising announcement, considering how old the originalPillars of Eternityis, but it’s still excellent news for fans of the franchise.

Marketed as a modern take on classics such asBaldur’s Gate 1and2, the originalPillars of Eternitywas released in 2015, receiving a two-part expansion a few months later and a sequel in 2018.Pillars of Eternityobtained glowing reviews at the time, with many critics praising the game’s story, worldbuilding, and atmosphere, and it gained an average score of 85 on OpenCritic. However, due to the low sales ofPillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, the series never saw another direct sequel.

Now,10 years after the original release ofPillars of Eternity, Obsidian has announced a new update which will bring turn-based combat to the old-school RPG. According to the developers, the Turn-Based Combat mode is currently in development and will be available sometime later in 2025. While the originalPillars of Eternityonly had Real Time with Pause combat, its sequel eventually gained a turn-based mode some months after its launch, so the new system will likely be fairly similar to the one used inDeadfire. Aside from the announcement, Obsidian also revealed that Patch 1.3.8.0.87535, which mostly fixes a few bugs, has been released for the RPG.

Pillars of Eternity Will Get Turn-Based Mode After 10 Years

This is not the first update that Obsidian’s classic RPG has received after so many years. Last year, for example,Pillars of Eternityreceived a surprise update, which fixed some visual, audio, and navigation bugs. At the time, it was speculated that the unexpected patch was likely aiming to polish the title before the release ofAvowed, but most fans did not expect to ever see yet another update to the classic role-playing game.

With the recent success ofAvowed, which is set in the same universe as thePillars of Eternityseries, it’s possible thatPillars of Eternity 2: Deadfirecould get new updates, too, but it’s still too early to tell. Last month,Obsidian revealed that the studio was “happy” withAvowed’s sales, although it remains unknown whether the game will receive a sequel or paid expansions. At the moment, the developer is focusing on releasingThe Outer Worlds 2, and only a roadmap for futureAvowedupdates has been promised, but not yet divulged.
