It won’t be long now before FromSoftware releases its next game,Elden Ring Nightreign. This title is a more compact and experimental take on the studio’s popular open-world SoulslikeElden Ring, repurposing its assets in a run-based setting that mixes enemies, equipment, and architecture into a randomized map that solo players or teams of three can explore over the course of two in-game days.Elden Ring Nightreigncaps each day off with a boss, and the third day is devoted to fighting a Nightlord chosen at the beginning of the run. It all sounds straightforward, thoughNightreignis committed to being anything but.

Although the single map with mild variations inElden Ring Nightreign’s network test didn’t fully convey how this would work, it still highlighted that a lot is going into making each run feel different.Nightreign’s different player characters, who will come with story components encouraging players to invest in them, should make things feel considerably different, but the star of the show is the enemies. Not only doesElden RingsupplyNightreignwith plenty of monsters, theDark Soulstrilogy is pitching in too. However, even this welcome crossover may not be as memorable as one returningElden Ringboss already is.

Elden Ring’s Margit Already Has Nightreign Players’ Attention

Margit’s Existing Fame Is Poised To Grow In Nightreign

SomeElden Ringbosses are more tied to the game’s identity than others, and few embody this more than Margit, the Fell Omen. Greeting Tarnished at the gates of Stormveil Castle with one ofElden Ring’s earliest cutscenes, Margit is the first wall players will likely hit whilepursuingElden Ring’s main quest. Complete with a second phase and voiced taunting, Margit has been making strong first impressions as far back asElden Ring’s previews. It wasn’t even necessary to give Margit a couple more fights, but FromSoft ensured that no one forgot Margit the Fell.

All of that and some pertinent story twists were enough to make Margit one ofElden Ring’s highlight bosses and characters already, butNightreignis poised to extend his reach even more. Margit’s return was confirmed in an early preview, but that did little to prepare players for how he would actually arrive. FromSoftware has experimented with recurring “hunter” bosses before, most notablyThe Pursuer fromDark Souls 2, but they have always been constrained by their encounters being confined to specific arenas. Margit was a subdued example of this inElden Ring, butNightreignis already turning him into the archetype’s new poster boy.

Margit Complements Elden Ring Nightreign’s Format Perfectly

Those “hunter” bosses are finally getting a chance to live up to their lore status inElden Ring Nightreign, and Margit is the first. Playing off of his campaign to wipe out Tarnished searching for the Elden Ring, Margit can randomly appear in aNightreignsession, targeting one player with aggression rarely seen in even a FromSoftware boss. Besting Margit, referred to here as The Fell Omen to denote him using abilities from bothhis Margit and Morgott identities inElden Ring, grants all players a powerful boon, but the death of Margit’s target will saddle the unlucky soul with a penalty for the remainder of the run.

Elden Ring Nightreign Is Ensuring That Margit Stands Out

Coupled with Margit’s ability to appear anytime, with Day 2 seemingly favored but not adhered to, and everywhere, with other field boss arenas being just as valid as any cave or ravine, he’sone ofNightreign’s fiercest threatsand a strong preview for a boss type likely including the aforementioned Pursuer andElden Ring’s Bell Bearing Hunter. What could separate Margit from his peers, however, is that he’s also a potential Day 2 boss with aNightreign-exclusive second phase. All of this should guarantee that Margit, the Fell Omen, will make an even bigger splash inElden Ring Nightreignthan in his already-bombastic first appearance.
