At some point after the disbandment of the Roger Pirates, Shanks and Blackbeard met each other in combat and it was here that Blackbeard took Shanks by surprise somehow.

Before Shanks and Blackbeard fight each other, fans need to take a look at the issue surrounding Blackbeard and the Navy. Fans know Blackbeard intends to do a trade with the Navy over Garp. This could lead to the Navy launching an all-out attackon the Blackbeard Pirates. In other words, the Pirate Island could become the battleground for a big war fought over Garp.
It is highly likely that Shanks will be involved in this war in some way. In the Paramount War, Shanks came right at the very end to stop the war.
