Summary

Although weapons are an essential part of each character in the world ofOne Piece, when it comes to Devil Fruit users with weapons, oftentimes they just get in the way of their more powerful Devil Fruit ability. For example, though Luffy may find some level of extra firepower when learning to wield swords with the Human-Human Fruit Model: Nika, using any sort of weapon would result in diminishing returns. However, of course, there are plenty of exceptions to this rule, with Devil Fruit users who combine weapons with Devil Fruit abilities to great effect, mainly with characters like Issho, and of course, the late captain of the Whitebeard Pirates, Whitebeard.

As many fans know, Whitebeard’s weapon, Murakumogiri, is one of the most essential blades in the entire series. Although the rest ofthe Supreme Grade Bladesrevealed so far are swords, Whitebeard’s Murakumogiri is actually more closely related to a naginata than anything else. This style of weapon is a traditional Japanese polearm that has a long pole and a single-edged blade on the end. Whitebeard’s Murakumogiri specifically is a bit more ornate than this, featuring a picture of a snake as decoration, and a striped pattern along the pole of the blade.

The History Of Whitebeard’s Murakumogiri

A Perfect Conduit For Whitebeard’s Strength

Although little is known about the exact history of the blade, Whitebeard was shown with Murakumogiri as far back as his early days withOne Piece’sRocks Pirates, long before the start of the series. Of course, he would be shown using this blade when he encountered and clashed with the Roger Pirates, as well as during the Summit War. After his death, the blade was placed on Whitebeard’s grave, where it currently resides to this day.

Out of any weapon inOne Piece, Whitebeard’s Murakumogiri is said to be the perfect conduit for all of his abilities. The Supreme Blade is said to be able to withstand and channelWhitebeard’s powerful Quake-Quake Fruit, allowing the former Emperor to enhance the blade with shockwaves. At the same time, the blade also seems to be an ideal weapon for Whitebeard’s impressive strength and Haki, once again, channeling these facets of Whitebeard’s strength with little to no problem. Already, being able to withstand the sheer force of Whitebeard’s strength and the Quake-Quake Fruit is enough to prove just how durable Murakumogiri is.

A Blade That Can Clash With The Pirate King

At the same time, the blade also possesses impressive offensive capabilities, letting Whitebeard clash with other Supreme Grade Blades likethe former Pirate King, Roger’s, Ace. Although it is sad to see sucha legendaryOne Pieceweaponout of commission, leaving it with Whitebeard’s grave is the most respectful send-off Murakumogiri could have. Though there is always the chance the blade could return, especially with Tashigi’s goal of collecting these legendary items, it seems, for the time being, Murakumogiri will remain where it is. However, onceOne Piecereaches its conclusion, there is always the potential for a side story that explores the importance of Whitebeard and his Supreme Grade Blade, Murakumogiri.
