Summary
Quick Links
Although they don’t appear often in the massive series ofOne Piece, there are plenty of important background characters to the community of the series. Overall, they aren’t the most vital characters to the story, yet, for one reason or another, the community has latched on to these characters, frequently discussing them, despite having very little to discuss. Due to this, while these characters may seem to be largely important to the plot of the story, in reality, they contribute little. Still, the little they have contributed has made a lasting impact on the fanbase.
Despite being an incredibly small niche, one character, Bogard of the Marines, falls into this category. Barely having any lines in the massive series, Bogard is one of those background characters that fans are always excited to see. WithOne Piecenearing its ending, some fans are still holding out hope that Bogard will have his moment to shine, potentially being an important element in the rescue of Monkey D. Garp.
Who Is The Marine Bogard?
Garp’s Right-Hand Man And A Background Character
Throughout most of the story ofOne Pieceso far, Bogard has acted as the right-hand man to Vice AdmiralMonkey D. Garp, the Hero of the Navy, and Luffy’s grandfather. For his personality, he seems to be fairly stern and quiet, often quietly observing from the background in most scenes he is in. Additionally, despite having the vital role of being Garp’s second in command, he appears fairly infrequently in the series, and when he does appear, he often does very little.

For his physical appearance, Bogard is tall with short hair and has a fairly serious-looking face. Most notably, however, he constantly wears a fedora and a darker suit, something that sets him apart fromthe other Navy Officers. Additionally, it is assumed that his appearance and name may be based on the actor, Humphrey Bogart, who also often wore a fedora in his movies.
What Has Bogard Done Throughout The Story?
He Participated In The God Valley Incident And Hachinosu Raid
So far, little is known about the history of Bogard, save for the fact that he has worked alongside Monkey D. Garp for a long time. The earliest appearance of Bogard in the timeline ofOne Pieceis duringthe God Valley incident, where Bogard was fighting alongside Garp in the battle. With this event taking place 38 years before the start of the story, it can be assumed that Garp and Bogard have been partners for a very long time. After this, Bogard was also shown with Garp when he rejected his offer to become a Marine Admiral.
During the actual series ofOne Piece, Bogard made his first appearance during the Cover Story, the Diary of Koby-Meppo, where he assisted in transporting Captain Morgan. Here, he was shown to havefairly powerful swordsman skills, quickly cutting Koby’s guns into small pieces when he interfered with the escort. After that, Bogard helped Garp train Koby and Helmeppo, teaching them how to properly wield a sword.
Where Will Bogard Go In The Future?
He May Help Save Garp On Hachinosu
Since then, Bogard has only made two more appearances, accompanying Garp when he visited Luffy after the Enies Lobby Arc, and duringthe raid on Hachinosu to save Koby. However, looking towards the future, some fans believe that Bogard may play a bigger role in the rescue mission to save Garp from the Blackbeard Pirates. Being Garp’s right-hand man, Bogard, along with Koby and SWORD, may turn to Luffy for help, creating a team-up between the pirates and the Marines to take the Blackbeard Pirates down.
I was going for the kill… but he survived. - Kuzan about Garp
However, for now, Bogard’s story is sadly incredibly short, especially when compared to his cool design and important role in the Marines. Still, withso many characters inOne Piece, it seems nearly impossible to give every character the time in the spotlight they deserve. Due to this, although it would be nice to see Bogard return and receive a substantial role in the Final Saga ofOne Piece, fans shouldn’t get their hopes up.
