Summary

Percy Jackson & The Olympianshas gone down well with fans and is set to catch up to its far less deserving predecessor, and fans want to know if there’s any word on the stellar adaptation going even further beyond that. Fortunately, there’s been word from the show’s lead creative.

The live-actionDisney+adaptation ofPercy Jackson & The Olympianswas a long time coming, as the children’s book series was a major deal in the 2010s and would eventually reach the peak of that niche and spread out further with crossovers and spin-offs, including a whole new mainline series with a far more mature tone. The franchise would first be adapted in film form to an underwhelming reception at the box office and with fans, after which the IP would lay dormant in live action until the Disney+ show was announced. Personally involved from the very beginning of casting and pre-production,Percy Jacksoncreator Rick Riordan praised the Disney+ showfor its more serviceable adaptation of his work, and after the first season dropped on the streamer, the fans agreed.

Thanks to that first success, the show has been renewed for a second season, complete with a replacement for Lance Riddick, who unfortunately passed away after the first season was filmed. While the second installment is still a ways from hitting Disney+, the fans are already thinking ahead to even more content. As it turns out, so are the show’s crew. Speaking toThe Hollywood Reporterin an interview concerning the show,Percy Jackson & The Olympiansshowrunner Jonathan Steinberg was asked whether he’d discussed coming back for a third season with other members of the team or execs at Disney, and he gave a pretty optimistic response. “We’re definitely talking,” Steinberg confirmed. “Part of wanting to keep the process going is trying to do whatever we can to be ready for it and to know how to have the conversations and to have a plan. Nothing’s official yet, but we assumed when we left Vancouver that we would be back at some point — soon, hopefully.”

For all its merits and flaws,Percy Jackson & The Olympians’first seasonhad a godly run on streaming, even managing to beat boththe MCU andStar Warsfranchises on Disney+in 2024. That alone should be reason to consider another early renewal, but the volatile streaming market has given companies cause to be cautious with even well-loved content. It’s unlikely thatPercy Jackson and the Olympianswill be canceled, as while Disney doesn’t own the rights, prior connections from the first publishing of the original books and Riordan’s direct involvement and approval make it as safe as many in-house IPs. It’s likely that Disney will see the adaptation to the end, or at least until it begins to underperform on the platform. It remains to be seen which comes first, but a third season at least looks very likely.

There are quite a fewthings thePercy Jackson and the Olympiansseries has already fixedcompared to the films that bring the Disney+ show more in line with the books, and that’s just what the franchise needed. With more seasons and more confidence at Disney, the show could actually fully adapt the bestselling series and compel adaptations for the spinoff books and series, most notablyHeroes of Olympus. With the more mature tone and better writing boasted by that direct successor, there’s a massive well of potential there that almost can’t be ignored. In the meantime, fans can keep their eyes peeled and fingers crossed for a renewal announcement.
