12Micah Bell
An Evil Man With Selfish Gain and a Forked Tongue
Micah Bell is a survivor of the Wild West, a man who craves the adrenaline, violence, and money that come with the life of an outlaw. Micah Bell doesn’t care about helping people – Micah Bell doesn’t even care about people full stop, he just wants to serve his best interests and to lead a life of his own interest with money and the barrels of his revolvers at his side.
Micah has no sympathy in his black heart, and he will kill any man, animal, woman, and perhaps even a child if it means he gets what he wants. Micah will betray anyone who dares get close to him and manipulate those who he dares get close to, proving that he’s a fiend inside and out.
11Dutch Van der Linde
A Charismatic Leader Who Yearns for an America Long Gone
Dutch Van der Linde is a charismatic leader, which is what makes him so manipulative. Dutch has his own flock, and demands of them everything. This nihilistic leader wants the world from those who follow him, and while he always has a plan, it seems to always result in death – whether that’s the death of innocent folk or his own crew.
Dutch can pretend to care about people, but at the end of the day, it’s just to further his own selfish ego. Dutch has proved time and again that he’s not afraid to lose people in his gang, nor is he afraid to kill innocent people if it means he cansurvive a day longer in a tamed West, with his disdain of society and laws impacting what he views as morally acceptable.
10Bill Williamson
A Brash Brute, Blindly Loyal and Deadly
Bill Williamson is a dullard, a man who gets easily frustrated when he makes a mistake or doesn’t get his own way. While Bill might be a tad stupid, he’s not to be underestimated, as if anyone gets on his bad side then he’s happy to put a bullet in them just to feel like the bigger man. After all, Bill has spent his whole life underestimated and frustrated.
While most of Bill’s struggles could be attributed to the lack of acceptance regarding his own sexuality, it’s no excuse for his selfish behavior that often sees him stack up bodies when he doesn’t get his own way. Bill’s blind loyalty to Dutch shows a selfish man who doesn’t want to help anyone and just wants the easiest life possible when it comes to holding a rifle to intimidate others.
9Sean MacGuire
A Young Irish Menace Who Robs Anyone He Feels Like
Sean MacGuire is young and foolish, and will often get himself into plenty of trouble. While Sean is loyal tothe Van der Linde gangand earns his keep, he’s still a bad person when he’s not interacting with the allies and friends he has. In the wild, Sean will attack and rob folk, whether innocent or otherwise.
Sure, Sean might not commit a homestead robbery unless he has good reason to, but he’s the kind of guy to shoot first and ask questions later, so long as the questions involve plenty of handsome loot. Sean’s ethics aren’t exactly upstanding, and he really does seem to enjoy the outlaw life as a killer and a thief, with no desire for anything more – unless that something more involves a romance with Karen.
8Javier Escuella
A Mexican Outlaw Who Longs For the Untamed West
Javier Escuella is another member of the Van der Linde gang who is blinded by his loyalty to Dutch. While Javier came to America after the bounty on his head got too high in Mexico, it saw him fall in with an even worse crowd, as Dutch would further grow the seed in Javier’s mind for a free country where he could be an outlaw for life.
Javier is like all the other members of the gang. He kills and robs, but there is a heart somewhere in him. Javier does not want the gang to fall, and while he will protect it and those within it, he’s also blinded by it to the point where he won’t think for himself.
7Uncle
An Old Man Who Will Do Anything to Get Out of Work
It’s hard to judge Uncle’s morality, but it’s not hard to judge his work ethic. Uncle is always found lazing around the camp, refusing to do work or making excuses that often involve lumbago. While Uncle isn’t at all dangerous, he is still morally flexible and questionable.
Uncle rarely uses his revolver to kill people, and it’s never really unjust when he does use it. However, Uncle is still a criminal, so rustling cattle and robbing banks is part of the parcel in the Van der Linde crew, but Uncle will never be found doing harmful and evil activities.
6John Marston
The Gang’s Golden Boy – Young and Stupid, but Learning
Arthur Morgan and John Marston don’t exactly have the best relationship. John seems to resent the hand that has been dealt to him, with hisquestionable love of Abigailand his lack of responsibility for his son, Jack, he’s not exactly the most honorable when he really could be providing a wife and his child with a better life than being on the run as an outlaw.
John has immense loyalty to Dutch, and that comes with the whole package of robbing and killing, but usually never innocent people. John is still haunted by Dutch’s murder of an innocent woman in Blackwater, which shows that he does have morals, but he’s less concerned with actually helping people than he is about just getting what’s best for him and his people.
5Lenny Summers
A Survivor, Never Consumed by Rage
Lenny Summers isonly young, and he has already lived a hard life. As an African American living in 1899, Lenny was subjected to racism and had his life forever changed when his father was lynched by town drunkards. Lenny spent a lot of time on the run after avenging his father, but his murders were justified, and never out of cruel sadism and hatred for life.
Lenny joins the Van der Linde gang as their youngest gunslinger, and while he isn’t against committing murder and robberies, he’s not exactly the most thrilled about it and seems to like the idea of helping other folk and being a valued member of the gang instead of a hated murderer.
4Arthur Morgan
A Self-Loathing Outlaw Who Dabbles in Redemption
Arthur Morgan can be seen asself-loathing and bitter. While this outlaw doesn’t dabble too much in kindness, some helpful streaks to his character make him far more complex than the other members of the Van der Linde gang. Arthur might hesitate to help strangers, but he usually ends up doing it, and he will defend and die for the Van der Linde gang to showcase his immense loyalty.
While Arthur is loyal to Dutch Van der Linde, he’s not blind, and he knows the difference between right and wrong, even if he sometimes dabbles in the wrong thing. What’s important about Arthur is that his road to redemption has the good man within him wrestle with a giant.
While Arthur Morgan can make some horrible decisions, most of them are player-dependent, so this entry will treat the canon as Arthur helping John get to safety instead of returning for the money.
3Sadie Adler
A Good Woman Who Develops a Blood Lust When her Life is Stolen
When Arthur Morgan meets Sadie Adler, she’s a new widow, a victim of the O’Driscoll Boys. As Sadie learns to fight for herself again in the loss of her husband, she finds herself consumed by rage, which has her burn in sin and murder as shefights alongside the Van der Linde gangto battle lawmen and outlaws alike.
While Sadie is new to gang life, she’s very enthusiastic about it, and it’s clear that much of her time as a gunslinger is a result of her grief-stricken vengeance. When Sadie avenges her murdered husband, Sadie turns a new page in her life as a bounty hunter and a woman who still enjoys the adrenaline thrills of the Old West, but with a moral code that stands above the gang.
