Warning: The following contains spoilers for Re:Zero, Season 3, Episode 16, “Results of the Battle for Priestella”, now streaming onCrunchyroll.
It’s been a rough road, butRe:Zero’s battle for the Watergate City of Priestella is finally coming to a close. The battle isn’t the only thing ending either, asRe:Zeroseason 3, episode 16, “Results of the Battle for Priestella”, is also the season finale. The season finale ties up the last of the Witch Cult’s invasion force and shows viewers the aftermath of the battle.
Admittedly, the battle’s ending was a tiny bit anticlimactic, as the final fight didn’t really result in a grand victory or defeat, but it could’ve been worse. At leastthe animation and pacingin the final episode were pretty decently executed.
The Conclusion to the Fight Against Gluttony
A Third Sin Archbishop of Gluttony Appears?
With Capella retreating from her fight against Al in the previous episode, the only fights remaining are against the two Sin Archbishops of Gluttony, Lye Batenkaitos and Roy Alphard. This episode picks up from the last episode’s ending scene, with Beatrice finally back on her feet and joining Otto’s fight against Lye. With a powerful spirit by their side, you’d think the fight would go far smoother, butLye could actually keep upwith Beatrice’s spells fairly well. He even managed to consume even more people from Felt’s mercenary group.
Fortunately, Felt finally returned with the metia that could supposedly harm someone as strong as Reinhard. Felt didn’t know how to use it, but thankfully, Beatrice did, as she seemed to recognize the metia from her past. The metia shot a ray of light that completely knocked Lye out. But just when you think they’ll be able to get ridof another Sin Archbishopfor good, a mysterious girl appears, takes Lye away, and injures Otto. The girl reveals herself as Rui Arneb, Lye and Roy’s sister, and the third Sin Archbishop of Gluttony. Beatrice, who had already exhausted her magic crystals, was in no shape to continue fighting, so she let them go.
The Aftermath
The Good
After Rui had retrieved her brother, all the people whofought on Subaru’s teamreassembled in the ruins of the Priestella City Hall. Here, they exchanged information about everything that happened that night and discussed what would come next.
Overall, the battle for Priestella was a massive victory for Team Subaru. Multiple Sin Archbishops invaded, trying to revive a dead Witch and obtain the Book of Wisdom, but they achieved neither of these goals. Subaru’s group also managed to slay Regulus, the Sin Archbishop of Greed, and captureSirius, the Sin Archbishop of Wrath. Of course, any attempts at interrogation on Sirius haven’t turned up with anything significantly useful yet. However, Reinhard seems to believe they’ll be able to extract some useful information about the Witch Cult from her down the line. Perhaps most importantly though, deaths were kept to a minimum, and no one on team Subaru died… technically.
The Bad
Despite winning the day, it wasn’t without casualties. Capella’s victims, whom she turned into insects and other small animals, still littered the city. A cure for their transformations wasn’t currently available, so Emilia had toresort to freezing themand keeping them in cold sleep until a cure could be found. Additionally, Capella’s Dragon Blood is still running rampant in Crusch’s body, and she is still completely bedridden.
And then there are the victims of Gluttony. Lye and Roy have consumed several people’s names and/or memories throughout their stay in Preistella. Either rendering their victims with no memories, forgotten, or indefinitely unconscious, depending on what Lye or Roy consumed from them. At first, you’d think it’s weird that they only showed Rui retreating with Lye. There wasn’t even a single scene in this episode covering the conclusion ofJulius and Ricardo’s fight against Roy. But it all became clear why in the end. In the final scene ofRe:Zeroseason 3, Subaru finds Julius standing in a dilapidated building. Wondering why he was just standing there on his own, Subaru approached and greeted him. Julius' response was unexpectedly of shock, asking Subaru if he still remembered him. Emilia catches up with Subaru and wonders who this stranger is he’s talking to. It was then that Subaru realized: Roy Alphard had consumed Julius Juukulius’s name.
“Subaru, you… know who I am?” - A scared and confused Julius
With a cliffhanger like that, fans would probably explode if they had to endure another four-year wait like what happened after season 2. Fortunately, that probably won’t be the case, as Kadokawa has already released anannouncement trailer forRe:Zeroseason 4. An announcement just after the season finale is a good sign that season 4 is coming either in late 2025 or sometime in 2026.
Re:Zero Season 3 is now available to stream onCrunchyroll,Muse Asia,MeWatch, and several other streaming services. Re:Zero season 4 has been announced, but has no release date set yet.
