Microsoft confirmed thatIndiana Joneswould get a PlayStation release before the title even came out on Xbox. However, there’s still no official release day in sight, although a leaker has claimedIndiana Jones and the Great Circlewill come to PS5 on July 20, 2025, with a Premium edition coming out two days prior. Both the Premium and Standard versions are supposed to ship with a hard copy of the game, as is the case with their Xbox counterparts, but now it seems there’s a catch.
Leaker Billbil-kun, who was also the source of the release day leak, took to Twitter to clarify that both PS5 versions ofIndiana Joneswill have an actual disc but will still require an online download to play the game. That’s not unusual in today’s environment, especially for a game of this size. Physical copies ofMonster Hunter Wildsrequired a 15GB updateto play, although the title was technically playable offline without it. As a single-player title, though,Indiana Jones and the Great Circledoesn’t necessarily need online features, so the download requirement may still be a disappointment to some fans who wanted to keep things entirely local. It’s also unclear if an internet connection will be required after the initial download or how big the update is.
The download may rub some fans of physical media the wrong way, especially in light of how earlier editions have handled hard copies. TheIndiana JonesCollector’s Edition doesn’t ship with any discsdespite coming in a physical package. However, the Standard and Premium versions on Xbox did have discs. It’s an unusual approach that lands somewhere between a full physical launch and a digital-only release, so it leaves fans uncertain about how the studio may approach physical releases in the future.
Physical editions of games have been a contentious topic in recent years. TheAvowedSteelBook had no discdespite its label as a “physical” version.
