AlthoughSquid Game Season 3will wrap up Gi-hun’s story, Netflix is considering other options to continue the saga beyond the flagship show,The Directreported. A newSquid Gameseries is reportedly being developed, with director David Fincher and British writer Dennis Kelly attached to the project. There are no details about the next venture for the franchise and the outlet noted that the streaming giant has not confirmed an American version of the hit South Korean series. However, there have been endless rumors that Fincher is working on that next. With the lack of confirmation, it remains unclear whether the nextSquid Gameproject will be an American remake, another original from South Korea, or a spinoff set in the United States. But Fincher’s rumored involvement in the project increases its chances of success.
Series creator and director Dong-hyuk previously confirmed thatSquid GameSeason 3 is the ending of Gi-hun’s story arc. However, he wasn’t closing his door on the franchise. “Personally, I see the third season as being the finale to this story. That’s because I believe I’ve had closure to the story I wanted to tell about society through the character of Seong Gi-hun,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. In fact, the filmmaker and writer said he could return to theSquid Gameworld to highlight other characters and he already had an idea in mind.
If I ever wanted to go back to the world of Squid Game, it would be about different characters with a different story arc. Some kind of spinoff, maybe. For example, the masked guards. How did they end up here? What do they do in their downtime? Something like that, maybe.
Squid Gameis a very interesting franchise and can continue beyond its third season because there are still many things to explore. For instance, they could create a prequel series, explaining how the deadly tournament started, introducing the audience to the founder of the game. They could also focus on The Front Man’s backstory and show how he ended up as the game master. Additionally, the series hinted that the same game could exist in multiple countries, so the franchise could explore internationally with new games, organizers and contestants.
Aside from focusing on one player or The Front Man, they could also focus on a law enforcement or journalist trying to uncover the truth behind Squid Games. Fans already have a taste of this through Hwang Jun-ho’s (Wi Ha-joon) storyline. The police detective is looking for the island where the Squid Game is held after his encounter with his brother Hwang In-ho aka The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) in Season 1 and discovering that the latter is involved in the game. They could also highlight another fan-favorite character like Choi Seun Hyu’sThor. His shocking and brutal death inSquid Game Season 2left many surprised since they wanted to know more about the character. Dong-hyuk saidThanos was one of his favorite charactersand when asked if he could create a spinoff for Thanos, he just said, “I’ll think about it.” While it remains unclear how they will expandSquid Gamebeyond Season 3, there are countless opportunities to do so.
