Summary
Buffy The Vampire Slayeris gearing up for the highly anticipated reboot, and a recent report gives fans a pretty big preview of the show’s alleged cast spread and the roles these new names and faces will play in the upcoming revival.
Buffy The Vampire Slayerwas a fan-favorite show throughout its run in the late 90s and early 2000s, with fans still eager for more despite its solid seven-season run. Since the show’s 2003 conclusion, there’s been a fan campaign to have the show return despite a plethora of tie-ins, including a comic series that picked up where the series left off. As such, there was a ton of excitement when it was announced that Hulu was on the verge of picking up a series revival, but there was also a lot of apprehension due to the sheer amount of time that had passed. Fortunately, theBuffy The Vampire Slayerrevival was sufficiently vouched forby original show leading lady Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was instrumental in bringing the revival to life after a long process of being convinced of its storytelling merit.
Since that first appeal on behalf of the project,Gellar has revealed more key information about theBuffy The Vampire Slayerreboot, including specifying that her returning Buffy won’t be the main character of the revival show. While there weren’t many more details available on what to expect, a new report fromDaniel Richtman on Patreoncasts way more light on who fans can expect to see in the upcoming series. As per the popular scooper, the series will revolve around a new character named Nova, who will be taken on by Gellar’s Buffy as a trainee slayer. Richtman also revealed some massive details about other members of the incoming cast via a casting breakdown, with the casting director allegedly “looking for actual teens or actors in their 20s for all teenage roles. Open ethnicity for all characters.”
Nova – A high school vampire hunter, determined and fearless, balancing school life with slaying. LEAD
Abe – Nova’s father, a dedicated photojournalist (40s-60s). LEAD
Mr. Burke – The school librarian who later becomes a vampire (30s-60s). LEAD
Cole – The alpha of the group, confident, and a natural leader. LEAD
Hugo – A nerd from a wealthy family, has a thing for Nova but is awkward about it. LEAD
Gracie – Nova’s best friend, fascinated by myths and a huge Buffy fan. LEAD
Mia – A social media-obsessed student who gets caught up in the supernatural chaos. SUPPORTING
Whilethe likelihood of each mainBuffycast member returning in the rebootis still unknown, the new show’s success will hinge far more on the new characters created for this revival. Nova will need to slowly bring together her own group of trusted allies and friends in the same way her predecessor did. The initial spread here seems pretty good for an introductory first season, and it’ll be a treat to see where the older characters fit into this new narrative. With multiple characters already set to take a lead role, the show probably won’t take as long to get the core group together, and it might kick off with Buffy already training Nova. This would bypass some of the awkwardness of establishing episodes by leaning on fan knowledge of the original show, and could be worth it to get viewers into the thick of things faster.
Buffy The Vampire Slayeris still one of the best things on Hulu, and the revival is pretty much guaranteed to be a big hit on release. Whether or not the new installment will live up to the two decades of fan longing and hype is still up in the air, but there’s a lot of potential here. With Gellar’s approval standing in place of details for now, more news on the burgeoning cast will do a lot more to substantiate that faith. In the meantime, the original show is still on the streamer for fans to brush up on.
