This article contains spoilers for Severance Season 2
SeveranceSeason 2 is over, and just like the season finale of Season 1, it sure looks like things have changed forever in the lives of both the Innies and the Outties, who work at Lumon and live in Eagan. Of course, depending on just what happens, it might be better or for the worst for their lives to change. One of the great things aboutSeveranceis that it’s impossible to tell, especially in the moment whether the changes are good or bad.
However, while the end of Season 1teased that things were going to be changing in a big way,Severancethen spent most of Season 2 rolling back all the progress that was made. Of course, a big part of the rollback was Irv leaving and Helly actually coming back into the office as Helena Eagan. The show also made the plot point its been hinting at for so long an explicit admission.Mark is not only centralto the show but he’s the key to “everything.” And for at least a little bit, he unlocks what Lumon has been waiting for him to unlock everything. Just what that means for the future, however is still very much up in the air.
What Happens In Severance Season 2?
WhileSeveranceSeason 2 started with Mark coming back to Lumon after taking the weekend - thoughMr. Milchick claims it’s much longerthan that - to think about it. After originally being forced to work with a brand new team, he forces Lumon to bring back Irving, Dylan and Helly but things are not all happy and fixed. Especially with Irv who has had enough of life at Lumon.
Eventually, he does find a way to leave the company forever when he realizes during the first ORTBO the group has ever been, he realizes that Helly R is actually Helena Eagan and he is willing to drown her in a river in order to get Mr. Milchick to admit they were running a long con.Irv eventually not only leaves Lumonbut leaves Eagan after the man his Innie fell in love with, Burt finds that Irving is really a spy and convinces him that he needs to leave town for his safety.

In the last few episodes, the end game is set up withLumon’s plans for Gemma/Ms. Caseyas a different kind of severed case. Mark is also going through a reintegration, though it’s going much slower than it did for his friend.Ms. Cobel is now an ally of Mark’s after finally realizing that Lumon doesn’t care about her, or at least doesn’t care about her in the way she needs.

TheSeveranceseason finale picks upwith Mark, Devon and Cobel going to a severance birthing cabin so that Innie and Outtie Mark can have a conversation using a video camera. While the two are finally able to communicate, they don’t really reach an agreement on what should be done about Lumon as Innie Mark knows he will die if Outtie Mark finds Gemma and they ride off into the sunset. Innie Mark also knows that Outtie Mark and Gemma ending up together means that Innie Mark and Helly will never work.
Back at Lumon, Mark has finished Cold Harbor which he’s found is actually the different personalities that Gemma was going through inSeveranceEpisode 7, “Chikhai Bardo.” However, once he finsihes Cold Harbor, he can’t get away to find Gemma because Mr. Milchick has started a celebration, complete with marching band. Eventually, Helly and Dylan -who was given the option to quit but decided to stay - are able to distract and trap Mr. Millchick while Mark goes looking for Gemma.
After a run-in with the always imposing Lorne Eagan, Mark escapes to the floor where Gemma is being kept and finds her just as she’s running a “final test” that seems to be a way for Lumon to prove to itself that a totally different kind of severance has worked as planned. It would seem this new kind of severance would allow them to enter the end game of the plan.
How Does Severance Season 2 End?
Not only does Mark find Gemmabut he’s able to break through her severance conditioning and it seemed as if things were going be a “happily ever after” type ending. Unfortunately, the way to escape is to go back to the severed floor, whcih brings Innie Mark back to the forefront. While he initially knows that he needs to get Gemma out, just as he’s about to follow, he realizes he doesn’t have to do it.
Instead, Mark S. turns around and runs back to Helly and the pair take off down the hallway. Meanwhile, Gemma is left on the other side of the door, all the way back and saved from theseverancechips, screaming for her husband to come back to her.
