Summary

Solar Oppositesis finally coming back to Hulu for its sixth season after a long wait, but fans will certainly be receiving the new season with mixed emotions, as the production shells out some bad news along with the good.

Solar Oppositeswas the brainchild ofStar Trek: Lower Deckscreator Mike McMahan and disgracedRick and Mortyco-creator Justin Roiland, coming out in 2020 on Hulu after falling through at its initial home at Fox. Despite somestrong and long running competition on Hulu, the series was quickly picked up by fans of Roiland’s other work and go good viewership going. Thanks to that quick success, the show would be renewed beyond its original two season order for a third, fourth and fifth installment, with a sixth season also being confirmed in July of 2024.

Over the show’s five-season run,Solar Oppositeshas proven that it isn’t just aRick And Mortycloneand has forged its own identity along the way, leading to the show having its own dedicated fanbase. Unfortunately for these fans, that relationship won’t be burgeoning for much longer. It’s been recently revealed that the upcoming sixth season of the show on Hulu will also be the last, serving as a curtain call for the series. This unfortunate news was revealed by the season’s official logline, perVariety. “Witness the wild chaos of this unhinged alien family as they get into hilarious mischief, all while the final chapter of an epic drama unfolds for the shrunken people they’ve imprisoned in their Wall. As the ‘Solar Opposites’ navigate their unforgettable farewell, expect laugh-out-loud surprises at every turn.”

The decision to cancel the show isn’t one that fans could see coming before its confirmation. For better or worse,Solar Oppositeshad the same appeal that makesRick and Mortyone of thebest comedy series with the most rewatchability, and did well on the platform to boot. While this decision would have been understandable in the aftermath of the Roiland controversies, the show managed to crest that hill and find a suitable replacement for the voices he provided, making this latter-day canning all the more unfortunate. It will undoubtedly be well-missed by fans and will certainly also be missed on Hulu as well due to the platform’s anime slant for animated content. There’s still one season left that seems set to bring the adventures on the show to a conclusive end, which is twice as important for a show with so many concurrent plots going for it.

While Solar Opposites isn’t just a clone, fans can still take some solace inthe recently refreshedRick and Morty, which is already cleared for an eighth season coming out sometime this year. There aren’t any extra details about that next installment, one thing that’s pretty much ironclad is that it won’t be the last for the show, which serves as a flagship for all the other projects that Roiland and co-creator Dan Harmon have put out since. The characters will be missed, but the same underlying appeal will still exist on that and other future projects that Harmon might take on.

Solar Oppositesis available to stream on Hulu, with the sixth and final season set to release this fall.
