Who is Min Byung-Gyu in Solo Leveling?

Byung-Gyu is an S-Rank healer from South Korea, one of the best healers around. He is introduced in the anime in Episode 1, as part of the third Jeju Island Raid Party. During that Raid, his friend Eunseok dies, leaving him devastated. Traumatized by his friend’s death and their failure,Byung-Gyu retires after the Raid. Even so, when Japan contacts Korea to gather information about the previous Raids in Jeju, Byung-Gyu flies to the country to share his experiences along with other hunters. There, they discover that the ants have evolved and that they now have wings.

Byung-Gyu is also friends with another important S-Rank hunter, Baek Yoonho, the Master of the White Tiger Guild, one of the top five Korean guilds. White Tiger is known for training new members by taking them to low-ranking gates with some of the strongest members of the guild. Before theFourth Raid Party is sent, Byung-Gyu hangs out with Baek for a drink and tells him that he doesn’t want to go back to Jeju Island and that he wants to become a history teacher instead.

Despite his initial reluctance,Byung-Gyu eventually joins the team on Jeju Island, where he helps the other members with his healing and buffering abilities. However, when they kill the fearsome Ant Queen, they end up attractingthe Ant King (or Black Ant), who is one of the most powerful enemies so far.

Realizing that his mother is dead, the Ant King attacks with no mercy, killing a good portion of the hunters. Byung-Gyu actually tries to protect his friends and teammates with his support and healing skills, but the Ant King is able to track him down and kill him mercilessly. The Ant Kingkills about half of the team, including Byung-Gyu and Goto.

However, that is not exactly the end for Byung-Gyu for now. Jinwoo, who also initially declined to join the Raid Party, later joins them and kills the Ant King. Many of the remaining hunters are injured, including Cha Hae-In. She is about to die, and in order to heal her, he resurrects Byung-Gyu as one of his shadow soldiers — he also revives the Ant King as a shadow soldier, now named Beru.

After healing Cha Hae-In, Jinwoo lets Byung-Gyu to rest in peace, keeping a promise to Baek, who was also part of the team. Even though, later on in the story, Cha Hae-In has a vision of Byung-Gyu’s spirit.

Byung-Gyu in the Revised Timeline

Later on, Jinwoo resets time and reverts Byung-Gyu’s death (and several other deaths too). In this new timeline, he lives a normal life as a university teacher, and later achieves a doctorate. However, he occasionally has nightmares related to his original death. He later awakens as a C-Hunter, but hedecides not to become a hunter, focusing on his research instead.
