How Jin-Woo’s Mother Contracted the Disease

Park Kyung-Hye Slept for Four Long Years

Since the appearance of the gates and the suddenawakening of the hunters, the world humans live in has never been the same. As the Earth slowly absorbed magical energy from the essence stones implanted inside the bodies of the magical beasts and through the manifestation of mana on hunters, a new supernatural disease was born—the Eternal Slumber. It is a cruel disease that sucks the life force of a human intolerant of mana or magical energy, forcing them to pass out until their bodies fall into a coma.

“Please let me take over the burden you’re carrying, Mom."—Sung Jin-Woo

Park Kyung-Hye, Jin-Woo’s mother, was one of the unfortunate ones who contractedthe Eternal Slumber disease. Once an ordinary and loving wife to her husband and children, Park Kyung-Hye’s life changes after she succumbs to the effects of the disease. As shown in the early events ofSolo Leveling, Jin-Woo’s mother has been sleeping for years, relying on life-support systems powered by the same essence stones. There’s no known cure for the disease, leaving Kyung-Hye’s children distraught and alone in the world.

Jin-Woo Cured Her Mother with the Elixir of Life

The Elixir of Life Can Cure All Kinds of Ailments

Sung Jin-Woo took a gamble on the system and the miracles it continues to create for him. After learning about the Holy Water of Life, otherwise referred to asthe Elixir of Life, and its effects, Jin-Woo decided to use it on her mother. After all, the system told Jin-Woo that this rare consumable item could cure any disease with powerful magic, possibly including the Eternal Slumber.

“Just how long was I asleep?"—Park Kyung-Hye

However, before Jin-Woo could obtain the Elixir of Life, he needed to get stronger and gather the necessary ingredients to complete its recipe. This miraculous potion has beenSung Jin-Woo’s goal, encouraging him to level up and defeat monsters in various life-or-death situations. Completing the recipe was no joke, as Jin-Woo had to conquer the Demon Castle before he could test the potion on her mother.

Jin-Woo’s gamble was a success, as her mother wakes up after consuming the potion. For the first time, after Jin-Woo became a player in the system, his eyes swelled with tears, seeing her mother alive and well again. It was an emotional reunion, with Jin-Woo finally accomplishing his personal goal in the series.

Will Jin-Woo’s Mother Become Sick Again?

What Happens After Her Recovery?

Fortunately, Jin-Woo’s mother never got sick with the Eternal Slumber again after her miraculous recovery. She returned perfectly normal to her home, to her children, despite everything that happened. The Elixir of Life worked wonders on her body, allowing her to walk and to be stable again despite being stuck in the hospital bed for four years.

After her recovery, Jin-Woo’s mother returned to her everyday house chores. She started cleaning, cooking, and even doing the laundry for her children, like any other normal mother. There’s not a single trace of her disease, as if she did not get sick at all. And because of her recovery, some people like Jin-Ho’s father seek the help of Jin-Woo after experiencing symptoms of the disease. After all, it’s his only hope to keep on living in a world where no cure for Eternal Slumber exists.

“Thank you, son. You kept your promise."—Park Kyung-Hye

In the later events ofSolo Leveling, Jin-Woo’s mother supports her children, particularly Jin-Woo, in their decisions. Even though Jin-Woo seems to follow in her husband’s footsteps, she tries her best to understand his situation, as she did with her husband before he disappeared for over a decade.

All in all, the recovery of Jin-Woo’s mother is one of the most important turning points inSolo Leveling. Not only do Jin-Woo’s priorities begin to shift, but he also takes on a huge responsibility on his shoulders—to save the world from chaos and destruction brought about by the never-endingwar between the Monarchs and the Rulers. It’s about time for Jin-Woo to look at the bigger picture after closing this chapter in his life.
