Summary
The developer ofSpectre Divide, Mountaintop Studios, has announced its decision to close its doors and end support for the live-service game following the unsatisfactory performance of the title’s first season. This news comes a mere six months after the US-based indie studio first releasedSpectre Divide, its debut title, in September 2024.
Back in 2020, a group of veterans with experience creatinggames at Naughty Dog, Respawn, Epic Games, and more came together to form Mountaintop Studios. After a few years, they kicked off their journey withSpectre Divide, a free-to-play shooter available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. However, their debut game received a mixed reception at launch despite attracting promising levels of engagement and, a few weeks later, the fledgling studio also laid off 13 employees in favor of securingSpectre Divide’s long-term future. As it turns out, that move wasn’t enough to sustain either the game or the studio, both of which are now scheduled to go offline soon.
Mountaintop StudiosCEO Nate Mitchell recently shared that the developer is set to shut down “at the end of this week,” which would be July 24, 2025. Additionally, he revealed that thesupport forSpectre Divideis also planned to end “within the next 30 days.” Notably, the indie studio exec highlighted the underwhelming response to the online multiplayer game’s first season, which became available on February 25, as a factor behind the move. He further said that the team plans on turning off new in-game purchases and refunding players for all the transactions done since the launch of Season 1: Flashpoint.
Mountaintop Studios Announces Decision to Close Down and Pull the Plug on Spectre Divide
Explaining the decision to close up shop, Mitchell said that, despite an “optimistic” first week,Spectre Divide’s Flashpoint season ultimately did not bring in the desired number of active players or a favorable amount of revenue to make up for the “day-to-day costs” of the game or the studio. Interestingly, this announcement follows just 16 days after the game’s console launch, which took place alongside the roll-out of Season 1. With this, Mountaintop Studios has become the latest entrant on the list of studio closures in 2025, which alsoincludes offices of AAA game developers like Ubisoft.
While fans of online shooter games are set to loseSpectre Dividein the coming weeks, another game in the genre titledFragPunkhas been turning heads lately. Even thoughFragPunk’s player engagement on Steamhas been nothing short of impressive, many are eager to see how long it can keep players interested with forthcoming updates.
