Arguably the most bizarre Side Story inSplit Fiction, Birthday Cake is also the final Side Story players can find. Even Mio is surprised to see this story come to life in the simulation, as it’s a story she wrote when she was a little girl.Mio and Zoe take the cute formsof two cute googly-eyed teeth as they adventure through a world that is by all appearances cute, colorful, and full of childish indulgence.
This Birthday Cake Side Story walkthrough takes players through this vibrant Side Story and explains how to get through this level’s puzzles, how to climb the titular birthday cake, and how to beat the Birthday Cake boss at the end. Behind the whimsy lies one of thescariest bosses in a Hazelight game, let alone justSplit Fiction– all those sugary treats in this level can’t be good for your teeth, after all.
How To Find The Birthday Cake Side Story
The Birthday Cake Side Story location is within the fifthSplit Fictionlevel, Rise of the Dragon Realm, which also features the Slopes of War and Space Escape side stories.
After you complete the Dragon Soul puzzle (in which players return four dragon souls to a statue by breaking four metal eggs), look for this side story on a platform to the left of the main path. Simply jump across the gap via an out-of-place floating gummy bear to get to the Birthday Cake Side Story portal.
Part One: Platforming Puzzles & Lighting Cakes
After coming to terms with your new toothy, googly-eyed form, walk down the waffle path, over the candy cane bridge, and jump across the green platforms to reach a chocolate area. Both players must then ground pound onto a mint-shaped pressure plate to open the door leading forward.
Platforming In Candyland
Follow the waffle path down the cliffside overlooking the chocolate lake and the titular birthday cake to reach a platforming section. Jump and dive to gain distance and make it across these gaps. If you stand on a waffle for too long, it will become loose and fall, so be quick, use your dive in mid-air, and get to the swiss rolls on the other side.
Avoid the swinging lollipops, then ground pound the shining green ground on the other side of this Sen’s Fortress-like area at the same time together. You will drop down into a lower level with more platforming puzzles.
Carefully jump from plate to plate, taking care to avoid being hit by the spinning ice cream and Flake bars on each plate. On the other side, jump onto the yellow jelly pile to get up the ledge. Then, jump onto the next jelly to be launched across a gap – but watch out for the rotating lollipop wheel.
Continue moving forward together, then jump on a jelly beneath a breakable green barrier inside of a cave. This will burst the green barrier open and lead you to the next area. Walk down the path, and jump into the cannon, to be shot over to the birthday cake.
Falling Birthday Cake Guys
As Mio and Zoe ascend the birthday cake, watch out forFall Guys-like obstacles. There are springs that will burst out of the cake and launch you off, gobstopper boulders that will crush you, cherries that will bounce you around, rotating platforms, and more to avoid.
Once you make it past an obstacle, if you fall off higher up on the birthday cake, you will respawn after the last obstacle you beat – not at the beginning.
Both players must make it up the cake about halfway to break a crusty area of the icing together. Ground Pound with the right trigger at the same time to reveal a jelly that will launch you to the next ledge.
Jump across the moving cake platforms, and avoid the cherries as they can bounce you off into the chocolate below. Bounce off of the yellow jelly directly in front of the gobstopper cannon to get to the final platform.
From here, simply jump to the top, wait for your partner, then light all of the candles of the cake.
Part Two: Dentist Boss Fight Walkthrough
Things aren’t quite how they seem in the Birthday Cake Side Story. Behind all the sugary, colorful cuteness of this level,there’s a terrifying final boss. Light the birthday candles on top of the cake and a pentagram will start to form. This summons The Dentist, the Birthday Cake Side Story boss.
The screen will go dark, and Mio and Zoe will awaken to find themselves still in tooth form, trapped in dentist chairs. Rapidly move your left analog stick side to side to get out and start the Dentist boss fight.
Dangerous Dentists & Chomping Teeth
To beat the Dentist,Split Fictionplayers must avoid his incredibly unnerving attacks, help each other out when caught, and turn his own moves against him.
Whoever escapes last will immediately start getting viciously drilled. The player who escaped first must dive into the drilled player to knock them free. The Dentist will then start to brush the arena, which you can simply jump over to avoid.
After this move, the Dentist will launch out piles of toothpaste. Avoid these or you will be trapped for a few seconds while you struggle to escape. He will then brush the arena clean once more, then launch out a pair of teeth with eyes to chase you both.
Once the chomping teeth come to a rest, you must Ground Pound the weak spot on its bottom side Then, one player must jump on top and take control of it. Move the teeth over to the Dentist’s hand and start chomping with the right trigger.
Shell Games, Hammers, & More Drills
While the player riding the chomping teeth has the Dentist pinned, the other player must Ground Pound his hand three times to blow it up. The Dentist will then capture one of you in a cup and play the shell game.
It gets unfair after a few seconds of swapping cups, so just guess whichever one feels right – we chose the center cup, which turned out to be correct.
After freeing your companion, the player who didn’t get drilled at the start will be caught with a tooth hook. The Dentist will slam a hammer into the hook and split that player in half. This player must hop to collect their other half to reform.
The other player will be drilled, again. Once the player who was cut in half reforms, quickly dash over to the drilled player and dive into them to free them. After this, the arena will begin to rotate as the boss repeats these moves.
Eventually, another chomping teeth enemy will come out of the Dentist’s mouth. Follow the same tactics as before – ground pound this enemy when it flops over, take control, then bite the Dentist’s hand while the other player ground pounds it.
Finishing The Fight
Finally, the Dentist will collapse. Both players must walk up to the drill and mash Y to shove it into the Denist’s own mouth, destroying the mechanical monster…. for a moment. After the portal appears, the Dentist will crawl back from the depths and chase Mio and Zoe as they escape the level.
With that, you will have completed the third and final Side Story of the Rise of the Dragon Realm level. After recouping from that nightmare, hop back on your dragon and chase down the Treasure Traitor and the Megalith to finish this chapter.
