Summary
DC Comicsfeatures some of the most intriguing and well-developed characters in comic book history.Given the vast array of exceptional characters, it’s only natural that romantic relationships are formed. However, in typical comic book fashion, these relationships rarely last. Nonetheless, a few relationships defy expectations and last longer than a few issues.
Whether as crime-fighting duos like Green Arrow and Black Canary or ancient lovers like Hawkman and Hawkgirl, these heroes rely on their partners on a day-to-day basis while saving the day or relaxing at home. In this ranking we will look at some ofthe best hero couples in DC Comics.
15Zatanna & Constatine (Zatanna Zatara & John Constatine)
The Magic Couple That Bring Out The Best In Each Other
Zatanna and Constantineare two of the most interesting characters in DC, but unfortunately, as a couple, they struggle to get it right. This doesn’t stop them from earning a place on this ranking, as when they are written right, it makes for a great story and a great couple.
They are often portrayed with a Bad Boy / Good Girl dynamic, which although tiresome at times, has led to some very rewarding stories over the years. For all his faults, Zatanna sees the good in John Constantine and is willing to stand by him no matter what, which, although not the wisest idea, shows how much she loves him.
14Robin & Batgirl (Tim Drake & Stephanie Brown)
The Third Robin And The Fourth Batgirl
After a rocky start, withStephaniehittingTimin the face with a brick, the two eventually hit it off while constantly bumping into each other across Gotham. Their early friendship continued on a rocky footing until they finally got on the same page and became an official couple.
After multiple breakups and turmoil in the relationship, with Steph even taking the mantle of Robin for a time, the two became a truly capable crime-fighting couple, with Steph taking up the mantle of Batgirl, and Tim as Red Robin. The fact that their relationship isn’t perfect is what makes for such an interesting read and makes them one of the more relatable comic relationships for a lot of readers.
13Wonder Woman & Steve Trevor (Diana Prince & Steve Trevor)
Lovers Across Time
AfterSteve Trevorcrash-landed on Themyscira during World War 2, he found himself surrounded by Amazonian women, and instantly took a liking to the princess of the Amazons,Diana. Diana, fascinated by the outside world, was drawn to Steve and left her home with him to join the Allies during World War 2. This origin of the couple was made popular again in the 2017Wonder Womanfilm.
The couple have a refreshing dynamic that’s not seen too often in comic book stories, with Steve often taking the role of the “damsel” in distress and Wonder Woman coming to the rescue. This dynamic has made for some great stories, especially during the Golden Era.
12Raven & Beast Boy (Rachel Roth & Garfield Logan)
Opposites Attract
Raven and Beast Boyhave been a fan-favourite pairing for many years now, and it’s clear to see why. The couple are a perfect example of opposites attracting, with Raven being more strict and serious while Beast Boy lives a more carefree and easygoing life.
The two help each other in different ways, with Beast Boy helping Raven relax and enjoy life, while Raven helps Beast Boy learn how to deal with serious situations, which is very important for a superhero. Overall, the couple is a great pairing, and it’s great for readers to see how happy they make one another.
11Flash & Iris (Barry Allen & Iris West)
“We Are The Flash”
AlthoughBarry and Irisare a great couple in the comics, the pairing has received widespread hate among the fan base due tothe live-actionFlashTV show from 2014. That said, the two have great chemistry in the comics, and most importantly, they are not foster siblings.
Despite splitting up multiple times over the years, Barry and Iris almost always end up back together, with their love spanning multiple storylines and eras. It’s a shame that the TV show has left a stain on the otherwise great couple, and hopefully, they will be shown in a better light in the future.
10Hawkman & Hawkgirl
Lovers Cursed Across Space And Time
Hawkman & Hawkgirlare some of those comic characters that the writers can never seem to stop changing, with more origin stories than viewers can shake a stick at. Thankfully, almost all versions of the characters are in a romantic relationship, whether as alien police officers or ancient Egyptian lovers.
As ancient Egyptian lovers, Prince Khufu and Princess Chay-Ara were cursed to reincarnate and fall in love all over again for eternity. As Thangarians, an advanced humanoid race, they were already happily married before tracking a fugative to Earth, and choosing to stay, becoming key members of the Justice League.
9Elongated Man & Sue Dinby (Ralph Dinby & Susan Dearbon)
The Most Heartbreaking Couple
Ralph and Sue Dinbyhave one of the most compelling and heartbreaking relationships in the DC Universe. As a couple, they have been through so many terrible incidents together but have always pulled through in the end. Despite her lack of powers as a journalist, private investigator, or Justice League administrator, Sue is always helping Ralph save the day.
Their most heartbreaking and popular story came from the Identity Crisis comic run in 2004. After being killed on their wedding anniversary, it’s revealed that Sue was going to surprise Ralph by telling him she was pregnant. This loss completely broke Ralph, and at Sue’s funeral, he physically couldn’t keep himself together, showing how much he truly loved and cherished her.
8Midnighter & Apollo
The First Openly Gay Couple In Comics
For those who don’t know,Midnighter and Apolloare essentially what happens if Batman and Superman were in a relationship and were made slightly more violent. After both joined the newly reformed Stormwatch, they instantly hit it off, but after the mission went south, they went into hiding together, forming a close friendship that eventually developed further.
After continuing the good fight as a couple, the two eventually got married and even adopted a child, Jenny Quantum. Although at first glance they may seem like simple characters who are similar to Superman and Batman, the two have great development, and their relationship is one of the most compelling and interesting to date.
7Batman & Catwoman (Bruce Wayne & Selina Kyle)
The Forbidden Love
Despite constantly splitting apart and getting back together,Batman and Catwomanhave one of the most interesting relationships in the DC Universe, especially considering how similar yet different they truly are. Both were orphaned at a similar age; however, the wealthy Bruce Wayne went on a quest for vengeance while the poor Selina Kyle learned how cruel life was on the streets of Gotham.
This similar yet different upbringing has allowed them to understand each other in ways other people simply cannot, essentially making them the perfect pairing. This complex dynamic has led to many great stories of them as a couple, although they do suffer from a constant on-again-off-again relationship.
6Nightwing & Starfire (Dick Grayson & Koriand’r)
The Leaders Of The New Teen Titans
Dick Grayson and Koriand’rhave a great relationship, one based on growth, passion, and devotion. What makes them great is how their personality complements each other perfectly. Dick, being raised by Batman, has a more disciplined and strategic mindset, and in contrast to that, Koriand’r is a free spirit, always following her heart.
These opposites ultimately attract and allow them to bring out the best in each other. Over the years, they have developed together as individuals and heroes, forming a bond like no other. Of course, they have been apart over the years as well, and had other partners, but they always seem to end up back together.
