Even though manyLast of Usfans thoroughly enjoyed every episode of HBO’s adaptation of the Naughty Dog video game sequel,Bill and Frank’s story, titled “Long, Long Time”, certainly takes a lot of beating. Thankfully, the series showrunner aims to recreate an episode akin to it in Season 2, which Mazin called “gorgeous”, excitedly asking viewers to “just wait” to see what they have in store for this currently mysterious episode when the show returns.
The Last of Us' Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann revealed previously that they would be giving more meat to a character from the game in Season 2 that had only been mentioned in passing inPart 2. In the same way the showrunners did for Bill and Frank in Season 1,Eugene Linden will make his grand debut in the showand be given his very own backstory. Played by Joe Pantoliano, who has starred in movies such asThe Goonies, The Fugitive, andThe Sopranos,Pantoliano’s role as Eugene will open up a whole new narrative for the mostly unknown gaming character who passed away from a stroke. Now, as Season 2 is only weeks away, those who loved Bill and Frank’s emotional arc will have even more to get excited about for one particular episode that Mazin can’t stop gushing about.
The Last of Us Season 2 Will Include an Episode Akin to Bill and Frank’s Story
According toMovieWeb, who was atThe Last of Uspress conference in Los Angeles,the series co-creator, Craig Mazin, teased that Season 2 will have an episode similar to Bill and Frank’s from Season One of HBO’sThe Last of Us.“That Bill and Frank episode… it just happened. I will say there is a gorgeous episode directed by Neil. But just you wait,” said Mazin.
For many fans,episode 3 ofThe Last of UsSeason 1 was an unforgettable onein which the story of hardened survivalist Bill met and fell in love with Frank, who happened to fall into one of his traps, and how the pair lived out their lives in the chaos of the post-apocalypse. One of the episode’s most touching moments was when Bill and Frank played the Linda Ronstadt song, ‘Long, Long Time’ on the piano, which would become a symbol of their love and not only a defining moment in the show, but their relationship too.
Mazin also teased that there would be a particular scene at the end ofThe Last of UsSeason 2 that was a significant part of the game. “There was a scene that is in the final episode of the season that was quite impactful in the game, but there was an evolution of it as we put it on film that blows me away… it was spectacular.” Although this “impactful” scene could really mean anything now since the series has changed up its timeline, Mazin could possibly bereferring to Ellie and Abbyfighting on the beach or, even though it wasn’t at the end, whenEllie decides to leave Dina on her quest for revenge. However, the scene does include Ellie, as Bella Ramsey seemed to agree with Mazin, stating “The stuff in the last episode were some of my favorite things to film.”
The Last of UsSeason 2 makes its premiere on HBO on July 04, 2025.
