Summary
The Walking DeadTV series boss Scott M. Gimple seemingly has big plans when it comes to breathing new life into one of the franchise’s most popular spin-offs and believes that fans would be eager to see more of the show as well. The post-apocalyptic series ran from 2010 to 2022 and, sinceThe Walking Deaddidn’t receive a season 12to tie up those tatty loose ends, something that many fans had requested, it instead ventured off into many spin-offs.
WhileThe Ones Who Liveonly lasted for one season,Dead CityandDaryl Dixonproved to be popular withinThe Walking Dead’s fandom and have since been greenlit for two seasons. The franchise’s original spin-off,Fear The Walking Dead, finished up its narrative in November 2023, whileThe Walking Dead: World Beyondwas only earmarked for a two-season run. However, TV’s most famous and popular zombie franchise is getting bigger with fourThe Walking Deadprojects in the pipeline, which shows AMC’s commitment to its world and the potential it has to keep on going for quite a few years yet. Previously, showrunner Scott Gimple teased thatRick and Michonne could make a comeback inThe Ones Who Livefor a season 2, but there is one other spin-off on Gimple’s mind.
Scott M. Gimple Wants To Develop More Tales of The Walking Dead
Talking withThe Direct,The Walking Dead’schief creative officer, Scott M. Gimple, disclosed that he would love to open up the world of the spin-offTales of the Walking Deadwhen asked whether more episodes of the anthology series could be in the future. Gimple, however, revealed that even though he doesn’t have “imminent plans” for the series to make a return, he thinks that fans would appreciate seeing “more from the characters” than what was shown before. He also stated that due to every episode honing in on a different group of survivors, it would prove to be less tricky to flesh out if it was to be developed.
“I’m desperate to do more of those. We don’t have imminent plans to do it, but I’m constantly, constantly, constantly bringing it up. It’s a more challenging show because of the variety because you’re starting at zero every episode. So that’s one thing that’s sort of slowing it down a little bit. But I always keep it in the mix as a possibility. We can only put out so many Walking Dead shows, Walking Dead hours a year. But to me, I think that’s a layup.”
“I think everybody wants to see more stories of it and I think we totally just scratched the surface. And on top of that, I really want to see more of the characters from the past and I know the audience does too. Or things that were referred to in the past that we never saw. So, I’m determined to have it come back and it’s a very easy show to come back. There’s no… you know, we didn’t end on a cliffhanger. So I think it’s a possibility.”
In September 2020, AMC announced they had been developing an episodic anthology series set withinThe Walking Deaduniverse and, to the delight of fans,Tales of the Walking Deadwas officially greenlit as a six-episode in 2022. In 2023, Gimple was reported to oversee the anthology seriesMore Tales from the Walking Dead Universe, and even though it wasn’t clear if another season was on the cards or not, his recent response seems to confirm that the producer and writer is very open to the idea.
For fans who have been wondering if aWalking Deadmovie could be down the road sinceRick and Michonne’s showwas initially planned as a trilogy of films, Gimple said it is “probably less likely” to happen. With so many spin-offs happening inThe Waking Dead’s universe, another season ofTales of the Walking Deadis unlikely to happen anytime soon, especially withDead Cityseason 2 set to begin on June 22, 2025, andDaryl Dixonseason 3 arriving sometime in the autumn of this year.
