Summary
The Witcheruniverse has some of the most complex and complete lores in the entirety of both the literary and gaming worlds, which has helped catapult it to stardom, garnering a fanbase that is now in the millions. Many consider thatThe Witcher 3: Wild Huntis the best entry in the series, and there aremany ways to make a playthrough as challenging as possible.
This title is quite extensive and has some of themost difficult boss fights in the entire franchise. However, even then, there are many things missing from the books, including some interesting characters that are only mentioned in the gaming universe. Here are afew characters fromThe Witcherbooks that are only mentioned in the games.
6Coën
A Mighty Witcher From The School Of The Griffin
Coënis a very interesting character that is not greatly discussed inThe Witchergames, although he has quite a story to tell. He is said to have contracted chickenpox when he was a child, which either suggests that he got it early in his life or underwent the Trial of the Grasses later than most candidates, as Witchers are typically immune to most diseases.
Along with Geralt, Lambert and Eskel, Coën is credited with having helped train Ciri in the art of swordsmanship. He is mentioned in the first Witcher game by the gardener at St. Lebioda’s Hospital, talking about a silver sword that belonged to him. Shani also mentions him in passing when Geralt asks about said silver sword, which can be used inThe Witcher 3with a mod. Cöen’s silver sword isone of the best in the game, so it might be worth trying it out in the third installment of the franchise.
5Insengrim Faoiltiarna
One Of The Most Experienced Members Of The Scoia’tael
The Scoia’tael faction has made several appearances throughout various instances in the Winter universe.Isengrim Faoiltiarnais said to have been one of the most renowned members of this faction, as, among other things, he was a key player in the events of Thanedd Island.
InThe Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings, a physical description of Iorveth is given, which is directly related to that of Isengrim in the bookBaptism of Fire. He also makes an appearance inThe Witcher 3as a Gwent card, so while he’s not actually a character in the third installment of the franchise, players can still get a glimpse of him in the popular card game. Those who have not played Gwent, might want to try entering the various tournaments in the game toshake up their second playthrough.
4Stefan Skellen
A Renowned Member Of The Nilfgaardian Imperial Secret Service
Stefan Skellen, also known as the Tawny Owl, was no less than a member of the Imperial Secret Service for Nilfgaard. When Cahir failed to capture Ciri during the Slaughter of Cintra, Skellen was tasked with getting a hold of her at any cost.
Upon Vilgefortz’ death, he was captured by the Impera Brigade and declared a traitor to be tried. He was sentenced to death by hanging in Millennium Square, and thus ended his short, yet exciting life. The rope with which he was hanged is featured inThe Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, along with a few other Nilfgaardian items collected by Caesar Bilzen during the “A Dangerous Game” quest. Stefan Skellen is also featured on a Gwent card. He is depicted clad in Nilfgaardian armor, which resembles the Nilfgaardian Armor set players can get throughoutThe Witcher 3. Granted, it’s not one of thebest armors in this title, but Geralt looks great wearing it regardless.
3Cahir
A Brave Intelligence Officer Of The Nilfgaardian Empire
Many of those who have not read the books or played the games might still know whoCahiris, ashe makes an appearance in the Netflix series. She was an intelligence officer of the Nilfgaardian empire, and a key player in the tragedy of the Slaughter of Cintra.
He was tasked by Emperor Emhyr var Emreis to locate and capture Ciri. However, he was unsuccessful in this task, which forced the Nilfgaardian government to put Stefan Skellen in charge of the mission instead. While Cahir might not be remembered as one of the best Nilfgaardian officers to have ever lived, he definitely deserves an honorable mention on this list for the roles he played in various important events. Cahir is featured inThe Witcher 3as a Gwent card and is even mentioned by Geralt if players choose the horse Cantarella in the quest “Broken Flowers”.
2Leo Bonhart
A Ruthless And Expensive Bounty Hunter
Leo Bonhartis, without a doubt, one of the cruelest and most evil characters in the entireWitcheruniverse. He was a bounty hunter by profession. However, while others who pursued the same line of work did not enjoy the suffering of others, he took great pleasure in watching burial scenes and inflicting pain on others.
He is said to have possessed three different Witcher medallions: one of the School of the Wolf, one of the School of the Cat and one of the School of the Griffin, which he allegedly took from three Witchers that had fallen to his skill with a blade. In the firstWitchergame, Bonhart is mentioned by Jean-Pierre when players first encounter him in the swamp, and he makes allusion to his cruelty and superior fighting skills. While he’s not featured as a character in any of the games, he sure would have been one to makethe most evil decisionsat every turn.
1Milva
The Best Archer Of Upper Sodden
Maria Barring, more commonly known asMilva, was a famous archer from Upper Sodden who led four fictional crusades against the dryads, hoping to reduce the numbers of their various expeditions.
She is briefly mentioned by Dandelion and the firstWitchergame, and, like other characters on this list, is also featured on a Gwent card inThe Witcher 3. She is also said to have joined Geralt’s company during his search for Ciri, which, given her hunting and tracking skills, was a most welcome event. Many players agree that she would have been an excellent choice for one of Geralt’spossible romancing options inThe Witcher 3, but, alas, this never came to be.
