Summary

Disney+has axed itsPrincess and the Frogtelevision series after years of hard work and development. Tiana’s voice actor has now spoken out in the wake of her fans' hopping-mad reaction.

ThePrincess and the Frogwas released way back in 2009. The film was one ofWalt Disney Animation Studios' final efforts to reinject life backinto the 2D animation scene.Whilst the movie was received well critically, garnering three Oscar nominations, it had a middling return at the box office, earning $271 million off of a budget of $105 million. Unfortunately, the only 2D-animated film since its release has beenWinnie the Pooh(2011), as the company has continued to shift towards a 3D animated model similar to that of Pixar and DreamWorks. Ultimately, that’s where the money has led them.

Tiana & Frog Kiss

ThePrincess and the FrogTV series was reportedly supposed to use a blend of 2D and 3D animation, similar to that of theInto the Spider-Versefilms. But fans of the movie were dealt a blow recently when it was announced that theDisney+series was being canceled. Now,on Instagram, the lead voice actorfor Tiana has weighed in to share her thoughts on the unhappy end to its development:

“I am too deeply disappointed that the continuation of Tiana’s journey in series form has been cut short.”

The Princess and the Frog Movie Poster

Anika Noni Rose was set to reprise her role as Tiana in the series. The heavy-heartedness she expresses in her post is only outshone by the praise she heaps onto the creative team for their years of effort. She takes the time to speak about “a lot of beautiful work” that was specifically contributed by “long-time champion” Jenn Lee, and the show’s writer-director, Joyce Sherri.

The film itself had such a vibrant and unique musical personality, it’s certainly a shame to see itget the boot by the House of Mouse. However, there is still a chance for fans to support thePrincess and the Frogin future projects. Rose explains that the series is morphing into aTiana Special Event, which is still set to air on Disney+. She called out to long-time admirers of the film:

“All of you beautiful, loving, loyal fans who’ve been championing not just the series, but a ‘Princess and the Frog’ sequel, tune in.”

Rose is clear, if fans want to see a continuation of Tiana’s story, then a groundswell of support has to come from them. Given Rose’s concern about viewership, Disney may be using theTiana Special Eventas a litmus test to see if audiences are interested in a sequel to the film. Disney+ executives only care about one thing in this day and age: clicks, views, and audience retention. So, Rose is advising fans to recruit:

“When I say tune in, I mean, tell your friends, family, coworkers, babysitters.”

Hopefully, Tiana’s storywill get a happily ever after, andThe Princess and the Frogwill continue to be an enduring brand for Disney+.
