Summary
While moviegoers bid farewell to theGuardians of the Galaxyfollowing the team’s last stellar outing, one character might be back sooner than fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe expected and going on a long overdue adventure.
TheGuardians of the Galaxyjoined the MCU as a rather stark contrast to theAvengers, with the band of misfits coming together out in space seemingly far removed from the more pressing matters that Tony Stark and co were facing on Earth. While the original film waseasily the MCU’s funniest Movie Of The Infinity Saga, every subsequent appearance the team or its individual members made would deepen the connection with the fans and enhance their characterization. This would finally come to a head with the emotionalGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. III,which managed to stand out as a win in the MCU’s worst year to date.
That success amidst heavy adversity might have just paid dividends for one important member of the team, per a recent social media post by the star behind the role. According toVin Diesel on Instagram, where the Hollywood star made a lengthy caption outlining a busy year that’s also set to include work ona project Diesel has been hinting at for years now, he indicates that he might be returning to hisGuardiansrole for a very special project. “Also, Disney wants their Planet X!” the caption reads in part. “Which some say is Marvel’s most anticipated movie, haha. The film where Groot returns to his home planet.” Planet X, the comics-accurate name of Groot’s home world, has long since been mentioned in the MCU during the firstGuardiansmovie, and there have been no attempts so far to adapt the locale for live action. While Diesel is clearly joking when he calls a potential project exploring Groot’s return to his home world the franchise’s most anticipated movie, it’s still an interesting idea.
The character has already received some special attention inthe aptly named Disney+ projectI Am Groot, and now the character seems set to get even more love in a new upcoming project. If Diesel is to be taken at face value, then it seems that the project is in high demand behind the scenes at Marvel Studios. It’s unclear how that factors into the overall plan for the franchise, as the MCU’s current slate of projects are one of either the grounded fare thatDaredevil: Born AgainandCaptain America: Brave New Worldrepresent or establishing projects likeFantastic Four: First Steps.A Groot movie seems a bit far fetched, but a Disney+ series would also seem out of place post-Vol. III.However, there’s no denying that such a project would bring some much-needed world building back to the franchise, which is more relevant as it becomes clear that the MCU can never stay fully grounded on Earth.
WhileGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3is the perfect end to the trilogy, there is still something to be said for exploring those characters that can be explored, such as Groot. A jaunt to Planet X would make for interesting Disney+ material if handled correctly, and there are certainly ways that it could be tied into the increasingly cosmic mainline narrative. If Vin Diesel is able to find time in his busy vest-wearing schedule to get the project off the ground, then fans might just be in for a treat at some point down the line.
