Summary
Wednesdayis one of Netflix’s most-watched series of all time, and the wait forSeason 2 can’t come soon enough for most fans who need to see what happens next with Jenna Ortega’s character. The first season ofWednesdaywas released all the way back in November 2022, which means it has been over two years since fans of the series have seen their favorite characters on-screen. However, the show’s delay does come with good excuses, such as the 2023 Writer’s Guild strike in Hollywood, which put a halt to the development of many major TV series, andWednesday’s location being moved from Romania to Ireland.
Wednesday’s supernaturally infused mystery tells the story of Wednesday Addams as she becomes a student at Nevermore Academy. While attempting to hone her powerful psychic ability, she ends up trying to solve a puzzle from her parents' past while also getting roped into a local murder mystery.WednesdaySeason 2 is on its way to Netflixsometime this year, but before that, Christina Ricci, who plays Mrs. Marilyn Thornhill onWednesday, might have addressed one reason why playing the part of the iconic Morticia Addams was never a route she felt she wanted to go down.
Wednesday Star Christina Ricci Doesn’t Want To Play a Mother on Camera
In a new interview withVariety, Christina Ricci discussed her long career in the film industry and how she first started out in the 1990 movie,Mermaids,at 9 years old. Now, 35 years later, 45-year-old Ricci is getting her very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. While discussing her childhood, Ricci was asked about which roles she would like to play that she hasn’t already. TheYellowjacketsstar replied that she didn’t want to take on a role where she had to step into the shoes of a mother, which gives a possible reason why the actor never wanted to play the part of Morticia. “I don’t really ever wanna play a mother on camera. I guess maybe the way I feel about motherhood is to me so personal and precious, and I don’t ever wanna exploit it, if that sounds right.”
“I think it’s easier to use emotions that you’re having way after the fact, and right now, being a mom and being in it and having so many feelings about it, I feel like it would be too much to actually do anything. You know, like I’ve read scripts about moms and sick kids. For me, it’s just like too raw.”
Ricci didn’t explicitly state that she didn’t want to play the iconic matriarch of the family or reference the seriesWednesday, but her feelings towards playing parenting types of roles certainly gives a good indication of her mindset when it comes to jumping into those characters on camera. Fans were disappointed when they found out that Ricci, who playedWednesday Addams in two movies in the 1990s, wouldn’t be taking on the part of Morticia in the Netflix show, and her comments could very well be the reason why.
However, Ricci did take on the role ofMarilyn Thornhill, the main villain in the first season ofWednesday, and was happy to hand the baton over to Jenna Ortega, stating that she “loved seeing Jenna do it as a fan and as someone who loves the Wednesday character. It’s fun to see another Wednesday.” As of yet,WednesdaySeason 2 doesn’t have a release date, but it’s slated to air sometime this year.
